Forget the bookies. I'm envious of the gamblers were were on this know on this one.

I think they do care. If the game is not run fairly, gambler's will stay away. The Superbowl is the largest single betting event of the year. Can you imagine if the handle was cut even 10% because folks felt the outcome was pre-determined? I think the books care... a lot.

Ayecarumba is of course quite correct. Its is sort of similar to fixing the Black Sox game "Say it ain't so, Joe".

Now as gamblers in the know or bookies in the know ... why not both?
If a bookie who might otherwise lay off some excess bets runs lopsided because he is "in the know" its just as profitable as a gambler who happens for some reason to be "in the know". Someone got it "direct from the horse's mouth" ... a frat boy, a bartender, a loose lipped player trying to impress some broad...who knows. Heck, maybe a bookie engineered it.

Every bettor will be happy to screw his bookie. Every bookie will be happy to adjust lay offs to screw other bookies. Ain't nobody not willing to screw someone if there is a buck to be made. Heck, ain't nobody not willing to screw someone if there is a cent to be made.

And I'm sure certain that an under inflated football or an over inflated football would make someone far more than a few cents. Its perhaps not a guarantee but it is an edge. Looking into the sun, knowing the quarterback did coke and two broads the night before, heck there are alot of factors. Guarantees are nice but even betting on an "edge" is likely to be profitable.

Is this not a big deal to you guys? A team allegedly deflates footballs to give themselves an unfair advantage over other teams and we are supposed to laugh it off. If you scuff a baseball or cork your bat you get ejected from the game and face a suspension. Why should it be any different in football?
The operative word here is allegedly. In your OP you indicted and convicted with no shred of evidence.

BTW - the Pats outscored the Colts 28 - 0 in the second half with properly inflated balls.

May I suggest you play "Can Do" from Guys and Dolls. Its the song about four guys each with information straight from the horse's mouth or the weatherman or whatever. Alot of money gets bet prior to anyone ever getting indicted or convicted or anything.

Though I will admit that there is a bit of "frat boyish prank" about this because the "edge" is so slight and problematic. After all, if they lose possession but ONCE, doesn't that advantage transfer to the opposite team?

How do you know they were properly inflated at the time?

The other team has their own balls to use... which quite frankly seems like a stupid way to run a football game, with each team providing their own equipment, rather than the league.

Hear hear!

The local team should supply all on-field gear (balls, chains, markers, the clock etc) for both teams to the League. The League then should test and manage the equipment for the duration of the game.

This sounds like the best option. Every team on the field plays with the same footballs properly inflated and monitored by the league.

As I understand it, that's what they do with baseballs... home side provides a few dozen for the game, refs hand them out as needed. The idea of each team having their own is Kafkaesque.
