While this is not strictly about TV, it may have some effect on future IP televisions.

The Federal Communications Commission has voted to change the definition of broadband by raising the minimum download speeds needed from 4Mbps to 25Mbps, and the minimum upload speed from 1Mbps to 3Mbps.

The number of US households don’t have access to broadband just jumped from 6.3% to 19.4%.

FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel wants to increase the minimum broadband standards far past the new 25Mbps download threshold, up to 100Mbps.

Taking his argument against changing the broadband standard into deep space, FCC Commissioner Michael O'Rielly said "the report notes that 4K TV requires 25Mbps.

We need Cheap fat pipes just like South Korea.
Heard about South Korea's internet, had no Idea about SIN and HKG.
Surprising HKG has the fat pipes with all the blocking of internet sites on the Mainland.

I remember a 2,400 baud modem on a noisy electromechanical phone system.

I think if you compare NYC with SIN and HKG you would probably find comparable speeds.

Google fiber is expanding into Southeast USA.

Where I am a the standard service is Download speeds up to 25 Mbps / Upload speeds up to 4 Mbps for $10 more you get 110 Mbps / 15 Mbps for $10 less you get 10 Mbps / 2 Mbps .

I don't know if 1000 Mbps is worth getting too excited vs 110 Mbps as download speed, but as an upload speed you have a potential to build a business. I know that fiber companies are pushing those Half-fast commercials.

I just upgraded my home broadband to 250Mb/s, which I easily get when I plug the cat-5 cable into my laptop, but I still achieve 190+ just over wi-fi. Sweeeeeet!

The FCC has changed the definition of broadband
The minimum broadband download speeds now begin at 25Mbps, up from 4Mbps
By Micah Singleton

As part of its 2015 Broadband Progress Report, the Federal Communications Commission has voted to change the definition of broadband by raising the minimum download speeds needed from 4Mbps to 25Mbps, and the minimum upload speed from 1Mbps to 3Mbps, which effectively triples the number of US households without broadband access. Currently, 6.3 percent of US households don’t have access to broadband under the previous 4Mpbs/1Mbps threshold, while another 13.1 percent don't have access to broadband under the new 25Mbps downstream threshold.

FCC Commissioner Tom Wheeler was vehement in his support for the new broadband standard. "When 80 percent of Americans can access 25-3, that's a standard. We have a problem that 20 percent can't. We have a responsibility to that 20 percent," Commissioner Wheeler said.

...

FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel wants to increase the minimum broadband standards far past the new 25Mbps download threshold, up to 100Mbps. "We invented the internet. We can do audacious things if we set big goals, and I think our new threshold, frankly, should be 100Mbps. I think anything short of that shortchanges our children, our future, and our new digital economy," Commissioner Rosenworcel said.
"I THINK OUR NEW THRESHOLD, FRANKLY, SHOULD BE 100MBPS."

Okay, now I'm just showin' off. Check it:

This upgrade we got from Wave costs about $250/month for combined package of landline phone, 250Mb/s internet and all HD cable channels. We have a Tivo brand DVR in living room with more than a terabyte hard drive that can record 6 TV shows at a time, all the HBO/Showtimes etc that's offered, and a "mini DVR" in each bedroom that links to the DVR in living room, like two slaves linking to the master (is it okay to say that these days?). The minis don't record, just play live TV and playback from the main DVR. The DVR comes equipped with HBO-Go, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc also.

What a time to be alive.

With almost nothing to record but crap,
and you being a crap connoisseur of
bad TV, you must be in 7th heaven. I
wish I could watch anything and think
it's good. But alas, I have finely honed
viewing taste so there's very little that
meets my standards. Of course, when
your brain is saturated with THC, anything
looks good.
