The Actes and Monuments, popularly known as Foxe's Book of Martyrs, is a work of Protestant history and martyrology by John Foxe, first published in English in 1563.

Burning people alive is often done in religious conflicts, and is meant to be an act of terror that is so awful that it should prevent similar minded individuals from fighting out of fear of the consequences.

Bloody Mary ordered the execution by fire for almost 300 of her subjects who had rejected Catholicism for the Anglican church founded by her father (Henry VIII). These actions and the popularity of Foxe's Book of Martyres drove a wedge between the two churches that in some ways survives even until today, but certainly until the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1791 and the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1829.

It is interesting that ISIS singled out a Muslim for this ultimate punishment while so far only beheading non-Muslims. Jordan is 92% Muslim.

"Foxe's account of church history asserted a historical justification that was intended to establish the Church of England as a continuation of the true Christian church rather than as a modern innovation, and it contributed significantly to encourage nationally endorsed repudiation of the Catholic Church."

The 'continuation of the true Christian church' is
the Eastern Orthodox, I believe. Why are they any
'truer' than the Catholics, a Jesus follower is Jesus
follower.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.
