For a change, good news from Mexico City

Starting in April, amending name and gender in a birth certificate will be a lot easier, no longer requiring proof of either surgery or two years in therapy, or a diagnosis, or any other obstacles. Also the process will be simplified. Unfortunately this applies only to birth certificates issued in Mexico City.

I was born in Mex City and my birth certificate was issued there, lucky me, though I've lived most of my life nominally right outside the city's jurisdiction.

The original birth certificate is kept by the city's civil registry, and it remains "reserved." Meaning it won't be easy for anyone to look at it, even for government agencies. And with an amended birth certificate, I can get a valid driver's license, a voter registration card (the preferred for of ID in this country) and a passport. With that I can change the name in all my bank and credit accounts, too.

I don't know when I'll do this, but hopefully sometime this year, next year at the latest. It's time.

Oh, I need to find out what to do about the US Visa... The regular one and (possibly) the other :)

The other US Visa is a complicated bureaucratic labyrinth. When I try to get it, hopefully, I'll do a blog about it.
