The streets were solid mud, the people
were filthy most of the time, and most
everybody had a perpetual cold. It's
why buttons were put on military uniform
sleeves at the cuff, to stop them from
continually wiping their runny noses
on the the sleeves.

One thing I am noticing as I watch is just how many outside scenes were filmed in front of a green screen and the background put in after. Maybe I have learned more about production the past 13 years. But as I watched you could see the foreground and background were both in perfect focus, which is not possible. Then you notice the ground is not quite lined up.

Read about the real Gem and the real Swearengen. This had to be one crazy place.

It was shot on a movie set in Calif. Ever
been to Deadwood? It's in a ravine
with hills on either side that go almost
straight up and are covered in pines.
Lots of gambling DT, we stayed in
Bullocks orig hotel. Nice place, small
rooms. They were all small when it
was built.

The real Swearengen was a cut throat crook
who died broke. Made money on liquor and
whores, spent it just as fast. The real Old West
is nothing like they portrayed in movies and
TV. It was a crap existence.

He would make in a night what a modern bar or gangster might make in a year when you put it in real dollars. Thing is, life was a crap existence anywhere then. The west gave you more of a chance. Even today, I found an attitude difference between AZ and WNY. The former was filled with transplants who were more willing to move and drive to get ahead. WNY was full of people who didn't want to leave, and often thought their existence was as good as it got.

Mu daughter lives in WNY. It seems
mostly run down with really bad roads
and half boarded up small towns.
Depressing.

Really depends on many things. Some areas are quite nice. Others you wonder why the town is still there.

Last time I went the freeway was
great till I hit NY state. It immediately
turned into a minefield of potholes.
On a freeway! Never seen anything
like it, I was all over the road avoiding
them. My daughter and her husband
laughed and laughed, they're so used
to it. 3rd world country BS..

No liability for potholes unless the EXACT location has been reported in writing.

Union laborers know if you repair potholes correctly you will be out of a job soon and will never get to be a foreman, so its just put down a patch and next winter the pothole is worse.

Not sure where you were, but the Thruway is usually in good shape except on the Indian Reservation, an ongoing issue.
