('cept parks and recreation which got publicity for firing an actress who slimmed down). Perhaps that is a sample of why they got cancelled. The shows are no good? Writers have to stop 'narrowcasting'? |

Perhaps, but sometimes people's tastes just change. TV used to be full of variety shows which vanished. One could say that people just moved away from it. NBC had about 30 years when their sitcoms were extremely popular, but people have simply lost interest in sitcoms in the last decade. People get humor more from standup than they used to. They watch comedians talk about the news. NBC sitcoms Year of Last episode - Name - # of episodes 2015 Parks and Recreation 125 2014 Community 97 2013 The Office 201 2013 30 Rock 138 2009 My Name Is Earl 96 2008 Scrubs 182 2006 Will & Grace 184 2004 Frasier 264 2004 Friends 236 2003 Just Shoot Me! 148 2001 3rd Rock from the Sun 139 2001 City Guys 105 2000 Hang Time 104 2000 Suddenly Susan 93 1999 Mad About You 164 1999 Caroline in the City 97 1999 NewsRadio 97 1998 Seinfeld 180 1997 Wings 172 1996 The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air 148 1995 Empty Nest 170 1995 Blossom 114 1993 Cheers 270 1993 A Different World 141 1992 The Cosby Show 202 1992 Night Court 193 1992 The Golden Girls 180 1992 Dear John 90 1991 Amen 110 1990 227 116 1990 The Hogan Family 110 1990 ALF 102 1989 Family Ties 168 1988 The Facts of Life 209 1987 Gimme a Break! 137 1986 Silver Spoons 115 1985 Diff'rent Strokes 189 ... 1978 Chico and the Man 88 1977 Sanford and Son 135 PARTLY BLACK AND WHITE 1970 I Dream of Jeannie 139 1969 Get Smart 138 BLACK AND WHITE 1965 Hazel 154 1964 The Joey Bishop Show 123 1961 Bachelor Father 157 1959 The Bob Cummings Show 173 1958 Father Knows Best 203 1958 The Peoples Choice 104 1955 Mr. Peepers 127 1955 I Married Joan 98 1953 The Aldrich Family 97 It is popular they will return to popularity. IMO, formulaic plotting works fine, but creativity takes work and some natural talent to keep producing something interesting out of it. Kind of like landscaping, food preparation or song writing or lots of things. You use same elements but can produce something interesting or crap out of it or usually just something in between. Get a good chef, you can eat chicken every day of the week and it's like a different meal every time. You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really? |

In 1998 the #1 box office film was "Saving Private Ryan" and most people thought that it was the last time an R-rated non CGI with adult themes would ever be #1 at the box office. Then in 2014, American Sniper was #1 in the box office. So the paradigm wasn't completely dead. NBC is keeping three sitcoms this fall along with the Will and Grace revival, but the two band new shows being introduced are both dramas. I liked both of them, especially Suddenly Susan. She was a fun character. I loved Sex in the City and still watch it in reruns. I liked Buffy, how many men will admit that. I still dream about my own Buffybot.. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |
