I never thought of the characters on Green Acres or The Beverly Hillbillies or Petticoat Junction as being 'noble', They were a demographic in the 1960s that America made fun of much like a couple generations before they made fun of immigrants from Italy and Ireland. My dad's family is from West Virginia and they didn't even get electricity until after World War II. By the 1960s there were still pockets of these people left but for the most part they were long gone. The totally redneck hillbillies represented on the CBS shows. The types of people represented on The Beverly Hillbillies were featured in the 1940s in the Ma and Pa Kettle movies, but even by then they were mostly gone. Loretta Lynn grew up around those types of people in the 1930s. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

They were a caricature to be made fun of. The idea was that the represented something that was not supposed to exist anymore. Same as they tried with Archie Bunker the next decade, one episode some guy said he wanted his assistant to see something "before it went extinct." It backfired with Archie as many people identified with him. As long as they tuned in the sponsors did not care. The President is a fink. |

Archie represented the 1940s more than he did the 1970s. In fact he made constant references to the forties. Norman Lear thought he was making fun of something that was gone but it was far from gone. Racism was alive and well when that show came on the air. But how would Norman Lear know, he lived in Hollywood for the last 30 years. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

I'm not sure that Archie represented any real time period. He systematically made fun of every European ethnic group. Real life racists usually identify as something. |

I came across a book 20 years ago called American Humor written in 1920. It was full of nothing but racist jokes and nationalistic jokes. It made fun of everybody, blacks, Irish people, Polish people, Italian people, Mexican people, Chinese people. Jewish people. Except they were all called by their slanderous names which I won't get into here. For black people it was watermelon and chicken jokes. Polish and Irish people it was how stupid they were. For Italians it was a lot of Barbershop jokes. For Mexicans it was fruit picking and the Rio Grande. For Jews, of course it was money. These were not considered racist jokes in 1920. This was white people making fun of everybody who wasn't White. People like Archie Bunker would completely understand this type of humor and never think of themselves as being racist. Or identifying with anything. This was the humor you heard at your local men's organization or bar. You could buy postcards in any drug store making fun of black people. When I was in the antique business I saw hundreds of them, people collect them. It was a totally a different time here that we cannot relate to at all. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |
