Terrafugia flying car, TRANSITION MODEL in 2010

A german designer feels that the concept for all previous attemps has a fundamental flaw

A car-plane should look like this when it is a car. The two compartments for driver and passenger allow the center space to be fore wing storage

When getting ready for airplane mode, the tail is extended out, and the wings unfold

I don't see the prop.

It's in the center (just a bit of red in that rendering)

It is shown on the top in this rendering, compared to two more traditional designs below.

They aren't saying, but my guess is you must manually attach and stow the wings. I don't see how they can get on the plane. My guess is the aerodynamics of this vehicle while driving are terrible, and it is only designed to negotiate city streets at limited speed.

I have to say, these concept car/planes that basically allow you to drive to the airport and takeoff have limited appeal to me. They may save you hangar rental, but at a huge cost in efficiency.

What you really want is VTOL and the abiity to do away with the airport.

Perhaps. But then he went and found another fundamental flaw for his design. The separate compartments preclude the ability for the driver/pilot and the passenger to talk. Imagine that on an hours-long trip.

Intercom.

What is needed is a good camper RV that flies and carries a micro-car.

Same construction principle as the Crystal Cathedral.

Is almost impossible to talk on any small fixed or rotary wing without headsets and mikes.

I don't see how anyone can trust a plane where the wings unfold or, ahem, 'snap on'.
Ignorance is bliss and knowledge is power. But having only some facts can get you into trouble!

How about a new flying WaveRunner with snap on wings?

Perfectly safe as long as you can inspect the fasteners and see they are fully inserted.
