I can't think of anything that actually has to be worked hot. But if it is a matter of money, or convenience, their are people willing to do it energized.

Maybe high lines, about all I can think. I never worked anything hot intentionally.

My brother in law is an electrical engineer
and he says the best advice is never do
anything with both hands when dealing with
live wires. Never give the juice a chance
to pass thru your chest cavity. Always
wear rubber soled shoes.

Oh, I am careful. I HATE being electrocuted. I shut off main breakers, the individual breaker I'm working on, whatever I can to make sure I don't get whacked.

That's not to say I've never been reckless. And that very 220 did whack me last year because I was stupid. But I try a lot harder when working with electricity than I would, say, gasoline.
Be bold and risk defeat, or be cautious and encourage it.

If that doesn't work, consider turning off the juice and grounding it.

When I think about it, he meant always.
You never know if a wire might be live
or come alive. I'm pretty sure the pole
guys never use two hands at once.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Shoes are not the issue.

"To guard against such an occurrence(electrocution), it is advisable to only use one hand to work on live circuits of hazardous voltage, keeping the other hand tucked into a pocket so as to not accidently touch anything."

I do this with everything, even changing a
fuse with the power off. One hand is always
in my pocket.

That is not how it goes in the biz. He may have meant only work one wire or phase at a time which is good advice?

Fair explanation in two minutes, two handed.

When in USAF, always had left hand in back pocket, when working high voltage on xray machines. But talk about dumb, was looking in oversize gas tank for generator, when I saw something gray floating. Ash from my cigarette. Talk about DUMB !

Turning stuff off/ breakers is best.

Quick reflexes got me shocked once.

You know, if something you don't want to fall, falls unexpectedly you make a grab at it. I knocked my lighting system into an aquarium and tried to grab it as it hit the water.

Bzzzzt!

Because of the way it happened I don't know if it's really possible to consciously stop yourself. I sometimes wonder if guys thinking they're too skilled to get shocked get electrocuted in similar situations because they ignore a simple safety procedure.

Fortunately it wasn't an appliance capable of roasting me.
