I borrowed this from another thread.

http://www.livescience.com/52364-origins-supernatural-relgious-beliefs.html

It goes a long way towards explaining the
mindset that gave birth to religion. It's
basically as I always thought. It has zero
to do with actual revelations from a god
or a higher being, and more to do with
socialization and our tendency to give
imaginary powers to things that have no
powers at all.

It also explains why organized religions
are being rebuffed by modern man for
a more secular life. We have so many ways to
communicate now that the need to meet
once a week to pretend we're worshiping
some god we can't see or hear is disappearing
right before our eyes. We fulfill our social
needs in so many other ways. We carry our
social network right in our hands now, it's
no longer in the church where we would catch
up on all the 'news'.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Neither our need and desire to gather in communities nor to worship God will ever disappear.
