Should ethicists be held to a higher moral standard?

The questions is pretty straightforward. I include also all religious people who claim to be knowledgeable of their religion, and in particular active priests of any religion.

But the reason is pretty obvious. People who preach ethics should lead by example, not hypocritically proclaiming "Do as I say, not as I do."

Of course, by ethics most people mean a variant of altruism. The fact that so many adherents of that moral code fail to live up to it is rather telling, also rather evaded by one and all.
