Lies, legends, myths, wishful thinking and perhaps a morsel of accurate history.
Is that a description of the art and science of Navigation at a certain time in history?

I also wonder why some things are stubbornly held on to as tradition, while other things change or are let go.

Jesus walked everywhere. The pope uses modern transportation.

A woman's position in society has changed.

When was the first black catholic priest ordained?

I think we have to be careful to determine what is incidental to what is essential. Jesus told His disciples to spread the Good News to the ends of the Earth therefore I think it is clear that walking is not essential to the Mission of Jesus. Instead early missionaries and modern missionaries today use every form of transportation and communication available to them.

The essential teaching that men and women are equal and should be treated as such is finally being more and more accepted in society, so that is a good thing.

The wonderful thing about being the Catholic Church, which means "universal", is that it is a Church present throughout the world. So in places like Africa or wherever the people there make up the clergy and congregations. We have had black saints going back to the first centuries of the Church.

Does that mean it is immune from scientific analysis?
Cooking is considered an art, not a science, but we spend a great deal of time and effort judging it by standards that we feel are perfectly acceptable to us.

The faith is very much open to scientific analysis. Science and Faith are both seeking truth, just in different ways and on different levels. They should be able to help one other to seek the truth. One can judge religion I think by standards that are universal. How does this help make your life better? How does this or that help you to be a better person? How does this help you to make sense of the joys and sorrows of life?

Noooo, science is seeking truth, faith claims
in every circumstance to have FOUND truth.
And in the cases of Christianity and Islam,
if you don't accept what they've found, woe
be unto you.

Faith HATES HATES HATES scientific analysis
because it never turns out well for them.
Science never says (ever), 'yup, we investigated
such and such religion and found it to made
up of sound, provable evidence.' Never happened
and never will happen.

If you go to any church of any religion, they will
never tell you they are still seeking the truth.
They will tell you over and over they have the
truth, and you're a dumbbell if you can't see it.
FrG himself has implied here over and over that
he doesn't understand how the unbelievers here
cannot see 'the truth' when it's right in front of
our noses.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Yeah right, like the "truth" of Darwinian evolution or the plain old "can't you idiots see my religious belief in global warming is the Henny Penny truth!" The sky is warming! The sky is warming! SQUAWK.................................

Science is about money, period. It's loaded with fraud and deception and anyone who puts their blind faith in it is deluded beyond the pale.

So, it is only a matter of time until there are female catholic priests?

The point of science is to uncover fraud and
deception and real science does that. You're
talking about pseudo science.
