DataGenetics discusses the question of whether Uber/Lyft software will empower jerks who want to step out into traffic and force driverless cars to get their brakes slammed on via computer; probably same attitude with drivers but computers that 'assist'.

Uber to pay $20 million to settle U.S. claims it misled drivers

it exaggerated prospective earnings in seeking to recruit drivers, documents filed with a federal court on Thursday showed.

The company had posted on its website that some Uber drivers made more than $90,000 in New York and $74,000 in San Francisco when the real earnings were considerably less, the Federal Trade Commission said in a court filing.
You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really?

Considerably less, what a joke. Most make
minimum wage when it's figured correctly.
It's a Ponzi scheme, like Amway. It totally
depends on signing up new drivers to
replace the ones that are dropping out at
record rates. You can make money if
you live in a metro area and work 15
hours a day, 7 days a week. Maybe you
can make $30K, if that's real money
to you.

That's why Uber has always been about
fierce marketing all over the world. Build
the company's net worth fast and unload
it for big bucks, or take in boat loads
of investor money, which is what they've
done.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

One mathematician likened the Uber drivers to those who knowingly do business with payday loan firms. They are so desperate that immediate cash transcends all notions of deferred maintenance, taxation, etc.

From slashdot:

In Chicago, Walter Laquian Howard sleeps most nights at the "Uber Terminal."

"I left my job thinking this would work, and it's getting harder and harder," Howard said.

"They have to understand that some of us have decided to make this a full-time career."

Howard has been parking and sleeping at the 7-Eleven four to five nights a week since March 2015, when he began leasing a car from Uber and needed to work more hours to make his minimum payments. Now that it's gotten cold, he wakes up every three hours to turn on the heater. He's rarely alone. Most nights, two to three other ride-hailing drivers sleep in cars parked next to his.

Thinking it would work based on what,
wishful thinking? You give people rides
in your own car, it's an unskilled 'career'
any moron can do job. There's a sucker
born every minute.

He should have done the math before he made such a jump. Or at least tried it out part-time first. Most smart people see Uber as a side hustle.

I did see that Uber itself is not profitable in its current form. Analysts are starting to think that Uber knows app based ride hailing is here to stay and will kill the old cab model and are trying to just build the base until the other services fall.

The old cab modes is due to die, so they might be on to something.

Most of the uber drivers are too financially desperate to 'do the math' and reaiize there are going to be zillions of other drivers competing with them and uber will be shaving margins and imposing costs. Its a slim carrot to begin with and it gets whittled down, but drivers are grasping at straws anyway. Information technology company?

Hey, I've been there where $10 looks like $50. But this guy quit a job.

It will settle in a few years, always does.
