Agreed. Strict control via medallions was doomed anyway, after NYC started virtually giving away taxi medallions to blacks so Harlem dwellers would not burn taxicabs.

I think things will stabilize at some sort of acceptable difference between nocturnal Uber Hovels and heavily capitalized cab companies. The computer processing platforms have to become more robust and the event planners have to provide greater technical assistance such as portable cellular towers.

For some reason it is always in CA you hear the worst of uber. I seriously wonder if the economy is so gilded there that is why.

Uber President quits.

Lyft may end up the leader as Uber just seems not to have the discipline to make it to profitability.

Uber's company culture has, it seems, always been terribly 'bro' centric. They've still got a lot of advantage in the market, but it's disappearing. Their technology isn't a huge barrier to entry, either. They've gone for breaking and disrupting the market and being first. Without a solid backing, that might just end up being a lot of money spent to break entry for a lot of other players... there's at least one tiny start up in this city that's just waiting for the law changes to pounce to all over the ride-share market, and have the drivers and tech in place to at least start in the next two weeks (in the meantime, they've got a different package/small delivery model in place).

It's not uncommon for one tech start-up to dominate a market for a while, then crash and burn and see its market grabbed by one or more other start-ups, or even mature companies. Look up Netscape, My Space, AltaVista, Yahoo!, etc.

the major difference is that Uber sells something while some of the above did not.

EB, tell me it is not so. A vetted cab driver would never do something like this.

There have always been bad apple cab drivers,
just not in the number that Uber produces
them.

Good for uber. Why install old tech for no good reason.

Because people feel they're being cheated,
that's why. They take an Uber to an event
and it's $9.00. They take an Uber home from
the event and it's $26. Nobody told them
there would be a price hike in the hour
after the event was over. They want a meter
so they can see what they're being charged
as it's happening.
