Because people feel they're being cheated,
that's why. They take an Uber to an event
and it's $9.00. They take an Uber home from
the event and it's $26. Nobody told them
there would be a price hike in the hour
after the event was over. They want a meter
so they can see what they're being charged
as it's happening.

When I used them the fare was estimated before I booked it. All on my smart phone.

Many people just assume it will be the
same and don't think about it or check
it. Many don't even find out till they
get their credit card statement. I've
taken Uber several times to and from
the airport just for fun and it's never
the same price and we go exactly the
same route. When I drove cab we
took lots of people to work and
every ride cost the same as the day
before or the month before, to the
dime.

But you were driving a taxicab, not providing an information skimming service between bidders and buyers and trying screw each of them to get your slice of the middle to be larger.

That's true, the rider knew what he
was getting every day. If it was $9
last week it's $9 this week.

So should uber riders refuse to pay less than nine dollars or should uber drivers refuse to take more than nine dollars? The auctioneer is skimming from both pools and not letting them know the base price is nine.

I had riders who took a cab to work
every day and if it was a little more
than usual, they refused to pay it.
If it was $7.70 instead of the usual
$7.25, the would give me $7.25.
And I never argued.

Of course the cost will never be exactly the same because it doesn't take the same amount of time to get there. The price you pay includes flagfall, distance and time. When you book a trip the app gives you a price estimate as has already been mentioned. The app knows what the traffic conditions on the route are like so that estimate will also take into account how long they think it will take to get there. It also tells you whether the cost includes and surge pricing. Perfectly transparent.

If people are too lazy to look at that stuff before they book then that's their problem if it comes to more that they expect. At least if they pass out in the back seat and then find the fare was double what it usually is there is recourse in the app for a recalculation. No such option when a cab driver takes you on the scenic route.

Unless you get stuck in traffic, time has
almost nothing to do with cab fares.
The meter is hooked to the drive train,
it measures miles driven. When a cab
is stopped, the meter measures time.
If you take a cab the same route every
day at the same time, in a few days
you will have an average that never
varies,

In an Uber that ride can vary as much
as a few dollars, it's ridiculous. And
sometimes the estimate is a fantasy,
they must pull it out of their asses.

That may be true for cabs but it's not true for uber. Fare is flag fall + distance + time. Time is always used not just when the speed drops below a certain level. A trip could easily take an extra 5 min due to catching a couple of extra red lights and bang there's your extra couple of dollars.

Also it could be varying because of the surge pricing model which is also very transparent. Again, if people don't bother to notice the surge prior to booking then they really only have themselves to blame. Sure you might not like a model where price is based on real time supply and demand but they are hardly alone there. And if you are unhappy with the fare you can ask for a recalculation with the touch of a button in the app. Uber will then recalculate based on the optimum route and refund the difference. Try getting that service when a cab driver has taken you via Timbuktu!

The cab driver would leave the meter running while you disputed it and charge you for the time arguing!
