But he DOES know where you live, or
where you're being picked up from,
duh. If it's a ghetto address, or a
supermarket, or a laundromat, or
a pharmacy, or a bar, chances are
the person isn't going more than a
few blocks. You learn this by doing
the job over a period of time. Those
are the fares that get refused, not after
they get in the car. As a driver it seems
you would know this.

These are also the backbone fares of
the taxi business. It's where you make
your nut every day, taking people on
short runs, keeping the mileage down
and having the smaller amounts add
up. But too many Uber drivers are
primadonna's, they only want the gravy
runs and leave the short ones hanging.
Unprofessional idiots.

You don't know you're collecting them from a supermarket or a bar or a pharmacy unless you live in the area. Almost all the time all you get is an address. Duh. The only way you get to know every corner of a large city is though years and years of full time work. As someone who used to work in the taxi industry I would have thought you'd know this.

The minimum fare means a few blocks is by far the best on an hourly basis. People apologise when they tell me they are only going 1km from the bar to their home. I say no problem, I'll get $5 for having you in the car for 1 minute.

So you look it up. Or you know from experience.
You know from the street numbers whats in that
block, if you know the area at all. You know that
1500 Fuller Ave is a laundromat. Uber drivers
do NOT wait to get there before they turn down
a fare, they know just like I knew as a cab driver
the fares that 99% of the time only go 4 blocks.

And often the business name shows up on the
drivers phone. Bobs Bar, or Glendale Foods.
And you just know it's a fat black lady with 3
kids and 8 bags of groceries and you get no
tip for carrying it to door. It goes with the
territory.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Yes IF you know the area. No one knows every area of a big city unless they are working full time for several years. That's the point. And actually they have no idea of anything until after accepting the job. All that's shown is the time it will take you to get to the pick up location. Accept the job and cancel too often you will be booted off the system. That will weed out most of these types.

BTW Have you managed to find a driver to show you how to see who made each piece of feedback yet? I'm dying to go in and see who gave me a compliment last weekend. I'd love to be able to go to their house and personally thank them. Do let us know how to navigate to this part of the driver app when you find out ok?

In the cab biz if a dispatcher gives you
a fare, you do not have the right of
refusal. For a curbside pickup, yes
you can say no. It's very unprofessional
of Uber to leave it up to the driver,
it's discrimination and shouldn't
be tolerated.

How is not taking a job due to concern for one's safety or not wanting to deadhead back "discrimination?" It is just business to protect yourself.

So you would refuse all ghetto fares
because you're 'concerned for your
safety'? You would be laughed out
of the business, let alone be called a
racist. I don't remember being in fear
for my safety even once in the cab biz,
where do you get this crap from.

The ghetto is where half the fares come
from, who do you think takes cabs in
a city, rich people?

My safety is more important to me than someone calling me a racist, which really has no meaning anymore given how often it is used.

It is not "crap." I have heard everything from pizza delivery guys being robbed and killed to a meter reader being locked in the basement. Take all the ghetto fares you like, I'll pick and choose. Difference between being a common carrier and independent driver.

If you're that terrified of the general public,
believe me, picking up strangers and giving
them rides isn't the business for you. lol!

We had an Uber driver here in Kalamazoo
that went on shooting spree for hours, and
while on duty killed a bunch of people. And
he was a middle aged white guy.

Not terrified of the "general public." Am smart enough to avoid high-crime areas, especially after dark. Avoid areas of known gang activity, where it is easy to get pinned in side streets. If you want to go into such areas to prove you are not a racist to people you don't know and who don't really care, have at it!

Yep.

Kind of an enjoyable read...
