Not terrified of the "general public." Am smart enough to avoid high-crime areas, especially after dark.

But that's impossible. If you pick up a fare
at the multiplex and they go into the
heart of the ghetto, how do you avoid
it. Kick them out when the tell you where
they're going? Or you pick up a fare at
the posh DT hotel and it's woman who
works there going to the ghetto again. It's
unavoidable, even for Uber. You really
have no idea how this business works.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Uber lists the fare, so just do not accept the ghetto fares.

Uber does not list the destination of the
passenger until you pick him up.

"Do Uber drivers know your destination?
They don't know where you're going. The Uber app lets passengers designate a destination, but drivers aren't privy to this information until they pick someone up."

So you can get a fare at the posh Airport
Hilton and it's a black maid going to the
ghetto. Happens all the time, it's part of
Uber and part of cab driving. You cannot
avoid the worst parts of town unless you
just turn down every fare going there when
they get in your car. You won't last a week
doing that.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

This whole thread is EB having a meltdown due to low tech cabbies being put out of business by high tech Uber

It's hilarious. And the irony is he doesn't seem to realise that a large percentage of full time Uber drivers are.....wait for it....ex cab drivers! You really couldn't script this stuff.

This doesn't quite jive with the stories of Uber drivers picking up fares on their way to work. How do they filter it then? Something amiss.

Uber has a destination option that the driver can use twice a day. You put in the address of where you want to end up and Uber will only allocate you jobs that are going along that route. I use this on my 50 minute commute to and from work or if I am on the other side of town at the end of the night and want to go home. It will give me jobs along the way and won't add more than 10 minutes to the trip.

If you're not using this feature then yes, you will have no way of knowing for sure where the passenger is going before they are in the car and you start the job.

You really are so wrong on so many
things. I ask every single driver if
any of them have had any experience
in this biz before Uber and so far not
a single one has said yes. Not ONE.
That's at least 26 drivers so far.

Very few do it full time, there's no
money in it. Most have full time jobs
and this is very part time.

Of course you did. We believe you don't worry. Many passengers I speak to mention ex cab drivers as being a problem because they brig their bad habits to Uber. Thankfully the rating system ensures that if they don't shape up then Uber will ship them out.

How are you going with the instructions on how a driver can see who made negative feedback? Managed to find a driver to show you yet??

"The ONLY way you'll be able to see the destination is to actually show at the pick up address and once you physically see the passenger or the passenger tells you to go ahead and start the trip. Starting the trip once you've arrived reveals your destination."

So if a ride is going to the part of
town you're terrified of, you won't
know that till they get in. And then
it's too late, you probably won't
get out of it alive..

Every single one I ask, it was my business,
why wouldn't I. It's something we would
have in common. I suspect most ex cabbies
would work the city where all the short
runs are, that's where the money is. If
you constantly have a fare, or are going to
pick one up, you'll make money. Sitting on
your ass waiting is the killer, you're not
making a dime.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.
