Playboy's time is in the past. When Hef dies, daughter Christina should let it go, if she's still in charge.

I wonder how Playboy does with their other business interests. If they do well, it would seem like the magazine is what it all hangs on, so keeping it around, even at a loss, might make sense. Then again, I know their Playboy Club at the Palms left a few years ago. I hear there is another one in Macau.

Regarding the articles, Playboy does great feature interviews. They ask very tough questions and are good at getting their subjects to open up. I recall with a smile on my face the fuss that was created when they got Jimmy Carter to say he had "lusted in his heart."

I can't say I've been very impressed with their gambling articles. Back when they had Edward Silberstang they were good, but when they lost him what little I've seen, other than when they quoted me, was pretty poor.

Anyway, I hope Playboy holds on, clothes or no clothes on the models. On the CBS news they just said the models wouldn't be "totally nude." I wonder if that means they will still be topless sometimes.

if not at least topless, they might as well save themselves the trouble.

I will say, though, that it is sort of an odd thing how a guy adjusts to what is presented. You might think that once you view Hustler or whatever at that level, it would be like being used to gambling at high stakes; for the latter, it's really hard to go back to betting a few bucks at a time without being bored. But soft porn, if that is all that is available at the moment, will juice up most guys still. Who looks at lingerie ads and goes, "meh"? Speaking for myself at least.

I have looked into this a fair bit and they are basically worth nothing after 1970 and not very much in the late sixties. Try putting a box of Playboys from any era after 1970 on Ebay and I bet you don't get $0.01, because they are not worth the expense of shipping. Maybe certain issues are worth something, like the Madonna one, but in general they just aren't worth their weight, and they are heavy.

I occasionally wish I could find the firsts one I ever saw (I remember the cover) and learned what they were, or but always figure what is the point. Am I the only one who's interest changed when I saw the Playmate was younger than I was?

BTW, they showed surprisingly little way back them. The Marilyn Monroe centerfold was an exception and even that looked blurry.

The Marilyn spread was photos they bought from someone else from years before, probably not stored all that well. It was to create buzz. After that they had the "girl next door" thing started. I saw some show on them once and they had some woman worked in the office posed a few times because they had a hard time getting models in the early years.

I can believe it. Some of the really early models were pretty old and/or heavy, especially in comparison to their models today.

In doing research for this post, I was browsing through this collection of every centerfold: http://alafoto.com/listing/thumbnails.php?album=329.

Interesting to note that the first year they had no-nonsense topless centerfolds, through Bettie Paige in Jan 1955. Then they went through about eight years of implied nudity where you didn't see any of the good stuff. Keeping with this sites decency standards, I think it is safe to post this image from the centerfold of November 1962:

Love that Siamese cat, BTW. He looks just like our beloved Simon, who passed in 2009.

It wasn't until Sep 1963 when you saw uncovered nipples again.

The assignment for Paco, or whoever wants, is to give us the history on when Playboy started showing pubic hair.

I just finished reading Down the Rabbit Hole by Holly Madison, who described Hef as a manipulative, self-centered man who kept all his girlfriends on a very short leash. When Holly moved into the mansion in her early 20s and became Hef's "main" girlfriend (of many many simultaneous girlfriends) when he was in his 80s (ewww yuck), life was a nightmare for playmates, who Hef controlled in every way. Many centerfolds have killed themselves over the years by overdose (Elisa Bridges, Anna Nicole Smith) or been murdered (Dorothy Stratten, Star Stowe). Holly Madison's story is rather unique in that she got away from it all and became successful in her own right. It's a good, entertaining, eye-opening read.

Yes, AZD, I remember the month when I realized I was older than the centerfold the first time. I felt oddly old. Then again later, when I saw a cop who was younger than I, then politicians, now the President is just two years older than I am. Where does the time go?

The Playboy Interviews are pretty good, even when it's someone I care nothing about. But I've noticed over the years the design of the magazine has been dumbed down to a high school level. Or maybe I've just gotten older, I don't know.

I think you are safe, as there are now racier pictures in Sports Illustrated (Kids)

You know the joke about the 2nd grader talking to a 1st grader. The 2nd grader says "I found a condom on the davenport yesterday". The 1st grader says "What's a davenport?".

The decision is based upon the premise that the magazine can no longer compete with hardcore pornography available (for free) on the internet. Playboy’s circulation has dropped from 5.6 million in 1975 to about 800,000 now.

It would seem the "articles" could not keep the "readers" around against the rise of internet porn.

I can't help but think this says something.

Here

In the late 1990s playboy.com had pics of the current issue and a random "classic" issue from the same month years before. Some 1970s issues had full nudity on the cover. Some of us may remember when said mags came in plastic with brown paper over the cover to block it. This had to be a silly business decision as you had to really take on faith what was inside.

I am thinking the entire franchise dies within 10 years. Without nudity Playboy is just another men's mag, and an expensive one at that. Meanwhile what they lose is that it has been a place where famous women might model for one career reason or another. I just do not see any other mag picking up that content.

I will bet you a beer that Playboy magazine is still in print publication as of October 2025.
