What I have a harder time with in that sentence is pinche. I've always taken it to mean something like "dang" but am all ears to a more robust definition.

So as not to discomfit Face: "Effing"

I get the impression that it is very Mexican, and not as common Spanish in other countries. It's an adjective, and shouldn't be confused with the verb "effing".

Wouldn't the verb be "to eff"? :)

The infinitive form is "to eff" . English is funny in that it uses the -ing form for many parts of speech. It can be an adjective as in "I am not paying for an effing wall" (Vicente Fox), it can be continuous verb "She is effing him", and also a gerund :

Effing helps you relax. subject of sentence
Her favorite hobby is effing. complement of sentence
I enjoy effing. object of sentence

Looks like they are trying to sell the works now.

For those of you not in the business world, now you know what it means to "dress the company up for sale!"

I don't want to divert to far but speaking of mags in general I noticed an issue of Time at the checkout and couldn't believe how thin it was. There's nothing to it. Who would buy it? It doesn't even have real articles, more like sound bites.

I subscribe to a dozen magazines at least because I'm a reader, then I donate them to the library when done. All the branches around me have a free exchange, or someone can buy the donations for 25 cents apiece.

I just started a new subscription to Time because the offer was too good to pass up, something like $10 for a year. I just got my first issue this week. It was thin for a monthly, but Time is a weekly. It was interesting enough I don't regret the decision to get it.

It does feel light compared to the 1980s. Time as a weekly was never about breaking news but in-depth coverage of the big event of the week. In high school we sometimes got to read it in social studies classes on Fridays, in one class you could never get more than a few articles.

They seem to have forgotten that this was their role.

It's the age of short attention spans. Articles are eighty five words or less and go six to a page. Mostly trivia.

Mixed 6 month results.

I'm too tired to do the exact math so this is all round figures.

Newsstand sales up 28% to 47,200

Subscriptions down 23% to 582,000.

100,000 new subscriptions.

The down % in subscriptions is way more than the up % at newsstands. Knock the 100K new subscriptions out and they look like they lost 1/3 of their base 6 months in, so call that about 60% after the first full year given level renewal rates per month.

I have to think they might have churned 1/3 of subscribers in any average year, but clearly it is going to be a case of having to find a nearly completely new audience. Of course one question is how many of the newsstand buyers are curiosity buyers and never really intend to buy again.

They expect the subscriber base to fall to 500K before it gets better.

I still say they have to keep the USA edition no matter if nobody buys it to keep credibility in overseas markets and that is the whole point.
