But he still took 7 trips to 17 countries in his first year in office (roundly beating the international travel of any President before him). His second year he took four international trips of one or two days before receiving delivery of the B747. After the B747 was delivered, Presidential travel became much easier, and for the rest of his term, and for President's Bill Clinton, GW Bush, and Obama long and frequent presidential trips became routine. Presidente Enrique Peña Nieto seems to be much more of a world traveller than any of his predecessors, especially to Asia. He is approaching the halfway mark of his term. One assumes that when he gets his Dreamliner, he will also increase the frequency of foreign travels.
In contrast President Ronald Reagan went to Canada twice and Cancun MX one time in his first year in office. President Jimmy Carter went to London for the 3rd G7 summit with a side trip to Switzerland' Geneva where he met the Syrian President up through New Year's of his first year in office. President Gerry Ford visited a little internationally when he took over from Nixon, but did not make a single international trip his last 400 days in office President Nixon traveled fairly extensively internationally for the time period. President LBJ went to one day trip to Canada in the entire year between JFK assasination and his own election. |
