It might be a poverty thing rather than
a race thing. I remember reading that
Loretta Lynn never got used to being
rich. She would shop for an electric
frying pan and buy 3 of them, for
when she was poor again. She would
buy 2 outfits exactly the same. 3 pairs
of the same shoes, 2 TV sets, on and on.

I would buy that except that poor whites did not exhibit this behavior. We really had no and still have very few other demos than black and white so I cannot "test" to another group. I have a friend in social work and he has agreed with my that by far blacks are way more brand conscious than whites. However, he has not noticed the same as me about them filling the house to the brim, or at least not to the same extent.

I know I do keep lots of food and other staples in the house plus will take "stuff" from people that I may be able to use. I have seen people who cannot make it and do not want to be in that spot. Is why my house and car are below the level of anybody else I know. I both had to move back home and have been in auto loans and mortgage loss mitigation. Scared straight I am.

Advertisers have known that for decades.
Black women will usually buy the more
expensive brands they see on TV, then
the same product in a store brand. It's
a self esteem thing, it makes them feel
better that they buy things they think
people with real money buy. Like living
is a shack, but there's a 2 year old
Caddy in the driveway. Or wearing tons
of gold plated bling and trying to pass
it off as real.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Use a debit card instead of a credit card if you have one. That fee is a percentage of the ticket but is maxed out at $8 per segment.

During the fare wars in the late 80s, an article in TIME described how to get the lowest fares more or less like this: "..but you must fly between a Thursday and a Tuesday (except Friday and Saturday), and book before Labor Day, and wear a pink pastel hat."

That's what the ultra-low costs are beginning to sound like. One is trying to buy an airplane ticket, not run a virtual obstacle course.

Cable companies

To increase service, such as buy an extra channel
as easy just pressing a button on your remote.

To cancel just that particular channel, no way to cancel via remote. No way to cancel online.

I was interested in purchasing the Big 10 sports network channel to watch my MD Terrapins.
I clicked purchase but then changed my mind. (after watching 1 game)
I searched all the remote control options. Nothing
I searched online, nothing.
I called my cable provider. They cancelled at no charge. I asked if there was any way to cancel that channel without calling. They said must call.

They do make it difficult but I do have two questions for you.

Why would you want to cancel the Big Ten network?

Why do you root for turtles?

Go Hawkeyes and Buckeyes (I graduated from Iowa and grew up in Ohio).
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a detrrent.

It's like those human mouse traps. Easy to walk in, impossible to walk out.

Of course, they are only humane if the human remembers to check them. Otherwise the mouse trades a quick painless death for a long slow one.

I saw a black family unloading luggage from
the shuttle bus at the car rental. There was
mom and dad and boy and girl teens. They
each had 5 bags, I was open mouthed with
wonder. Two huge suitcases each, and three
smaller ones each. For 5 days in Vegas. I
heard them say they had a car for 5 days. The
luggage fee's for 20 bags have been amazing.

To be fair, I pack enough clothes to wear and don't try to economize the way you do. I never pack excess clothes and neither does my wife. But we don't go to the resort of wearing shirts over shirts to avoid paying luggage fees either.
