What is love?

Simple question (and irony of placement).

I've been asking the Roxbury Guys the same question.



Seriously, I think it is a word used to describe the release of endorphins when you're around somebody you find pleasing to be with.

It is a contract

Ask FrG. He says he's 'madly in love' with a
dead guy, go figure. I would like to see what
a shrink would read into that. I thought it
was just FrG being weird, but no. It's a 'thing'
now to say you're in love with Jesus.

Many pastors and teachers are doubling-down on the relational language – encouraging their flocks to “fall in love with Jesus” or “have a love affair with Jesus.” This kind of romantic imagery seems to be popping up everywhere. “I fell in love with Jesus at the age of 15,” said a man giving his testimony at a banquet I recently attended. I heard another man describing his “passionate love affair with the Savior” at a men’s retreat.

There are best selling books on how to
have a love affair with Jesus, I kid you not.
I thought the whole Jesus thing was creepy
before, it just went to a whole new level
of creepiness for me.

A quick definition is a recognition of your values in another person, or in a thing or an animal. In this context, "thing" covers a wide spectrum from actual concrete objects, to ideas, concepts, institutions, associations, processes, sports, etc, etc.

But this is too simple. Your values might correspond very well with someone you know, yet you might find their personality, or some other aspect of theirs, completely intolerable, or even repugnant. And the same goes for animals.

I love my dog because he's sweet and cute.
He always wants to do what I'm doing, he
never complains. I love him because he's
so devoted to me. I can reach down and
scratch his belly and he looks at me
adoringly. I love him because he's lovable.

God and Jesus are the opposite of lovable,
so I distrust anybody who says they love
god and Jesus. They're kidding themselves.
What they really mean is, they want to love
them, they try and love them, they just hope
it's enough. But real love? Nope, nothing
there to love.
