But there are still only 5 films on the list (3 of them from this year). $2,027.5 Avatar 2009 $1,528.1 Titanic 1997 $1,163.0 Furious 7 2015 $1,095.6 Star Wars: The Force Awakens 2015 $1,018.1 Jurassic World 2015 Seen in this way, it is interesting to see how amazing Titanic and Avatar were in the eyes of the world. The sequels to these three are obvious candidates to enter the list in 2017 and 2018 4/14/17 Fast 8 12/15/17 Star Wars: Episode VIII 6/22/18 Jurassic World Sequel Is there any guesses for films that might make the list in 2016? I think that "Independence Day: Resurgence" is the best candidate to return a billion dollars from overseas market in 2016. "Independence Day" made $511 million in the overseas market back in 1996. But keep in mind that another Will Smith series earned a lot less. MIB made $338.7 million, MIB2 $251.4 million and MIB3 $445 million overseas. Hancock made $396.4m overseas in 2008, and 'I Am Legend' made $329.0m in 2007. |

1) MIB is kind of an acquired taste. Plus the second and third movies were not nearly as good as the first one. 2) Hancock made any money at all? I'm impressed. 3) I disliked that movie back when Charlton Heston was the last man on earth. I liked the Simpson's satire much better ("SILENCE! You're talking too loud.") Why do they keep putting Clooney in these awful movies, he's the reason they don't make any money. He keeps trying to be Cary Grant, and he's just not funny. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

The Charton Heston film was actually a remake. The original was made in 1964 and is now in the public domain.
A commercial, if not a critical success. Will Smith had a nearly phenomenal record for making fiscally successful films. Other than "Wild Wild West" which didn't lose horrific amounts of money, he was golden until he tried to make his son a movie star in After Earth
Well that is a risk with Ind Day sequels. They may not be as good as the original. |

I could glibly say it would be hard for a sequel to be worse than the original stinker, but Species 2 proves it's possible. Donald Trump is a one-term LOSER |

Meaningless at the BO. It's a flop for sure. I like O Brother and would have liked it more without Clooney in it. He's terrible at comedy. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-hail-caesar-underwhelms-862324 If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

A Coen Brothers film never ever has that kind of box office. "Burn After Reading" had overseas revenue of $103.4 million, and that was the highest they ever made. To capture the hearts and minds of the Chinese, Koreans, Russians, etc., you need a film that promises technical wizardry. It doesn't have to be pure fantasy, action, or sci-fi, as obviously Titanic made the list. But Titanic did promise technical film making that would look good on the big screen. Hail Ceasar only cost $22 million to produce. It's a virtual certainty that they will make a profit on streaming and DVDs. It's similar to "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" with a $20 million budget. It earned $34m domestic and foreign: $37.86 million. That is a moderate success in the box office, but with Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood, and Tom Wilkinson in the cast, it is bound to be very successful in the aftermarket. Tomorrowland, with George Clooney had to make money in the theater with a $190m budget. |
