Isn't the Christian argument that Jesus will do all those things when he returns for a second visit?

This is Fr G's territory but he may be busy with Lent. My understanding is the second coming is the end of humanity. Life on earth ends and anyone here goes to heaven or hell at that time and anyone waiting in purgatory or limbo gets to heaven, sentences there commuted. No more need for earth since humanity ends. Paradise is granted.

I thought the order was this:

1. The Anti-Christ will rule on earth for a while.
2. The rapture.
3. Some time on earth without Christians.
4. Jesus comes back and reigns for 1,000 years.
5. That's all Folks.

In Catholic school post-Vatican II they just told us he was coming back. No time of reign or anything, he gets here and it's over for earth and humanity, come home to heaven. Now that is just what I remember and didn't learn beyond 8th grade. I didn't take the History of Religion in HS after 8 years of Catholic school, was ready for other things. Take my disclaimer how you will, this is really FrG's level.

But IMHO we are well into #1 right now.

What is a reasonable amount of time in which to expect the second coming?

Someone is organizing a campaign for 13 April 2016. It's interesting because about 12 years ago, there was a scientific study that said an asteroid might hit the earth on 13 April 2029 (1 in 60 chance). Now if 1 in 60 seems like pretty good odds, keep in mind that the consequence may mean the end of humanity.

But whoever is organizing this campaign seems to have simply retained the day and moved it up 13 years.

Now, it looks like a lot of videos (like the one above) were simply retitled without the author's permission. That video has no discussion about 13 April. So it appears to be an elaborate prank.

Asteroid story on Nasa web site.

A bumbler =) I almost said it, but I don't remember Nareed having said she read the series. Figured it'd be a wasted reference =p

I haven't read one word ever written by Stephen King, or any number of other popular authors. About the only widely popular author I've ever read is Crichton, and he's not that good. Not to mention his central themes require a construction crane in order to suspend one's disbelief from.

I was a snob and never read King till
I was 40. I read 'It' and holy crap, I
was hooked. He can tell a story like
no other modern author. I devoured
his books and read them again and
again. Just read Salem's Lot. You'll see.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Better you than me.

As I understand, King writes horror. This appeals to me about as much as fantasy or religion.

I've heard it said "The Shawshank Redemption" is based on a short story by King. If so, I wouldn't read it because the movie is really good.

That's were I went wrong, too.

I was little when "Pet Semetary" and "It" hit theatres. PS was OK, "It" I thought was corny. But both rated high in cheese. That's it, they were just "cheesy".

Because of that, I shunned his books. I wasn't much of a reader, anyways. Until one bored day at work I picked up "Hearts in Atlantis" just to kill the time.

There's still cheese there, don't get me wrong. He doesn't even deny it. I think he referred to himself as the "Burger King" of novelists. Just empty calories, in other words. And his plots do always revolve around the supernatural. Vampires in 'Salem's Lot, Vampires in Needful Things, a possessed car in Christine, a time traveling gunslinger in The Dark Tower. But in the midst of it all, there's is some GD good writing. Writing that sticks with you for life. Paragraphs of imagery that stand out in your mind as if it was a snapshot from your very life, it's so real.

Sometimes the plot doesn't matter. When you daydream a memory and just can't place it, can't remember where, can't remember how old you were when you were there,... and then realize that memory is of one of his books? That's powerful writing. I know exactly what that hunting cabin looks like in Dreamcatcher. I was in it before. It's not but just outside of town, a 7 minute ride from my house. But it isn't. It's in his book. But I've been there.

I'm not very well read, but I really dig his style. And I don't think my appreciation is due to my ignorance.
Be bold and risk defeat, or be cautious and encourage it.
