I always
suspected presidents traveled a lot
because it's not on their dime and
when they retire it's pretty much over.
Trump could care less about traveling.

I think it is that and all the fawning. After you take out the nations regularly visited, a POTUS visit is a huge thing to most nations. Some near once in history. They go all-out. Remember when Bush visited Africa and the reception he got? Music, dancers, the works.

It is interesting as no other world leader gets this treatment except for maybe the Pope. It really is the biggest thing some of these smaller nations may see, ever.

Meanwhile, POTUS visits my town and I have snipers keying on me as I walked from my car to my office......
The President is a fink.

The British Monarch

In 1947, the King and his family toured Southern Africa. The Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, Jan Smuts, was facing an election and hoped to make political capital out of the visit.

George was appalled, however, when instructed by the South African government to shake hands only with whites, and referred to his South African bodyguards as "the Gestapo".

Despite the tour, Smuts lost the election the following year, and the new government instituted a strict policy of racial segregation.

Princess Elizabeth's famous 21st birthday speech was broadcast from Cape Town . She would be married later that year on 20 November 1947.

Wow, even at 21 she sounds like an
insufferable pompous ass. That's what
was said about the Duke and Duchess
of Windsor. They were always invited
to every party for decades, but if they
went they were mostly ignored because
they were the most boring pompous
asses on the planet. If you were a host,
you wanted them for their presence,
not for their conversation. The Duke
especially was avoided, he was dumb as
a rock and it was obvious every time he
opened his mouth.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Trump seems to feel that trips to Canada and Mexico are unwarranted, and would prefer meeting in White House.

Trump seems afraid he'll be met by protest and invective (as he would be), and prefers to cower from behind the Resolute desk.

s the question. He can't really skip the summits, but will he make any courtesy visits.
  1. Lima, April 13–14, 2018 President Trump is scheduled to attend the 8th Summit of the Americas.
  2. Buenos Aires, Nov 30 – Dec 1, 2018 President Trump is scheduled to attend the 2018 G20 Buenos Aires summit.

The 9th Summit of the Americas will probably occur in April 2021, so it may be a new POTUS. The North American Leaders Summit seems like it might be caput. So it is conceivable these two trips will be his only ones to Latin America

President Trump will be hosted to a state visit by President Juan Manuel Santos after the Summit of the Americas.

Enrique Peña Nieto has only 36 weeks left in his Presidency of Mexico. As most people remember, President Trump visited with Nieto in Mexico City during August 2016 while on the campaign trail. I assume Nieto will spend his final days as President at the G20 Buenos Aires summit.

Change of Federal Government Day is saturday DEC 1, 2018 in Mexico.

One official state visit by the President of Mexico has been a feature of every Mexican presidential term since 1959. The newly elected President of Mexico may wait until after 2020.

It turns out that President Trump can skip the summit (because of Syria). VP Pence will fly to Peru this weekend (it is not clear if Pence is going to Colombia as well), and Trump is the first US POTUS to miss a Summit of the Americas.

I'm not a big Trump fan, but simple courtesy means you should minimize direct name calling of heads of state (past or present). I have a difficult time believing that Carlos Salinas is not guilty of taking large amounts of money during his Presidency, as both his brothers were in serious trouble with the law. But I do not refer to him as a thief.

Quote: Wikipedia
In November 1995, Raúl Salinas's wife, Paulina Castañón, and his brother-in-law, Antonio Castañón, were arrested in Geneva, Switzerland, after attempting to withdraw $84 million USD from an account owned by Raúl Salinas under an alias.

Their capture led to the unveiling of a vast fortune spread around the world and amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars, even though Raúl Salinas had never officially received an annual income of more than $190,000.

A report by the U.S. General Accounting Office indicated that Raúl Salinas had transferred over $90 million out of Mexico into private bank accounts in London and Switzerland through a complex set of transactions between 1992 and 1994.

In 2008, the government of Switzerland turned over $74 million, out of the $110 million in frozen bank accounts held by Raúl Salinas, to the government of Mexico.

The Swiss Justice Ministry indicated that the Mexican government had demonstrated that $66 million of the funds had been misappropriated, and the funds, with interest, were returned to Mexico. The Salinas family would not receive back any of the frozen funds.

In January 1999, after a four-year trial, Salinas's older brother Raúl Salinas de Gortari was convicted of ordering the murder of the PRI official (and Salinas' brother-in-law) José Francisco Ruiz Massieu and sentenced to 50 years in prison. In July 1999, an appeals court cut the sentence to 27 1/2 years. In June 2005, the conviction was overturned, and Raúl Salinas was freed.

On December 6, 2004, Salinas's youngest brother, Enrique, was found dead in Huixquilucan, Estado de México, inside his car with a plastic bag strapped around his head. The case remains unsolved.

I believe in showing the Orange Pussy the same consideration he shows everyone else. If he ver grows up and acts like an adult, well, that wont' ever happen.

I have an easy time believing he did just that. But he instituted some needed reforms, and he wasn't the biggest crook to occupy Los Pinos.
