It is not really a surprise that Mexicans are the number 1 origin of immigrants in five of our major metropolitan areas. Now there is increasing evidence that the Middle class is booming in a changing Mexico. I think it is nearly impossible to imagine a USA with a border like the ones in the European Union, but do you think we will live to see a Mexican-USA border that resembles the Canadian-USA border? By that I mean where Citizens of Mexico can travel anywhere in the USA with just a passport.

Dallas-Fort Worth Metro Area (1,016,221 immigrants)
1. Mexico (58%)

Houston Metro Area (1,113,875 immigrants)
1. Mexico (49%)

Los Angeles Metro Area (4,407,353 immigrants)
1. Mexico (43%)

Chicago Metro Area (1,625,649 immigrants)
1. Mexico (41%)

San Francisco-Oakland Metro Area (1,201,209 immigrants)
1. Mexico (21%)

New York Metro Area (5,117,290 immigrants)
1. Dominican Republic (9%)
2. China excluding Hong Kong and Taiwan (6%)
3. India (5%)
4. Mexico (5%)

Washington Metro Area (1,017,432 immigrants)
1. El Savador (13%)
2. India (6%)
3. Korea (5%)
4. Mexico (4%)

Miami Metro Area (1,949,629 immigrants)
1. Cuba (30%)
2. Haiti (9%)
3. Colombia (7%)

Not in our lifetime. Mexico has to both raise their own living standards to where visitors visit like Canadians do and lower criminal activity. But it is not just medicos living standards. If otm immigration doesn't fall the border would still need tight controls.

If you are not familiar with the acronym, OTM means "Other than Mexican" and is an official category of illegal immigrants used by the border control. Obviously people come from all over the world, but especially Central America, to sneak across the southern border. Since entry into Mexico is relatively easy compared to entry into Canada, the illegal immigrants coming from Canada are statistically a low priority issue.

I don't think we will ever have an open border like they have in Europe, but I was suggesting there may be a day when entry without a visa will be possible.

There is a small, but vocal group that wants to require a visa of everyone in the world.
