pew Member since: Jan 8, 2013 Threads: 4 Posts: 1232 | I assume that "actual flat projection" is the same as "rectangular" which inherently distorts great circle lines that go near the arctic or antarctic........ No I mean the REAL flat earth projection. They won't show you that one. |

In June 1961 El Al extended the record for the world’s longest scheduled non-stop commercial flight with a 9,270 km (5,010 nmi) route from New York to Tel Aviv with a Boeing 707. JFK to Cairo is a little closer at 9,010 km. I don't know when EgyptAir started that run, as there may not have been a demand for it in the 1960's. But Sub-Saharan Africa is a different story. I believe the first nonstops were in 2009 Johannesburg to Washington, D.C. - South African Airways 12,813 km 30 April 2009 (nonstop flight moved to New York JFK on 1 May 2011) Johannesburg to Atlanta - Delta Air Lines 13,582 km 3 June 2009 But nonstops to sub-Saharan Africa have multiplied in recent years. But the majority of people go through Europe.
Rectangular keeps the landmasses familiar, but distorts the polar air routes considerably. A North pole projection for a map is fairly easy to understand, but it is useless if you cross from Northern Hemisphere to Southern Hemisphere.
People in my office often flew the LAX to HKG route in the 1990s. Even though it is a little shorter than flying to Sydney I think on a bad day it can be harder. If you stay in the Northern Hemisphere you are in the trade winds the whole way, and when they are blowing hard the plane used to have to land in Tapei to refuel on the outbound leg. 11600 km Los Angeles Intl, Los Angeles, CA (LAX) to Hong Kong Intl, Hong Kong, HK (HKG) 12100 km Los Angeles Intl, Los Angeles, CA (LAX) to Sydney Kingsford Smith Arpt, Sydney, AU (SYD) 15345 km Los Angeles Intl, Los Angeles, CA (LAX) to Singapore (SIN) {3 February 2004 - 20 October 2013 Singapore Air} |

Funny how Atlanta is further way. You would think it is closer because it is further south. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

I blame the map for distorting the relative positions of the cities. Atlanta is hundreds of miles west of DC, so I guess that absorbs the N/S savings? |
