odiousgambit Member since: Oct 28, 2012 Threads: 154 Posts: 5094 | I suspect the efficiency of the new refrigerators comes from smarter ways of defrosting. I still say the savings are largely delusional when the new appliances don't last like the old ones. There should be congressional hearings, goddammit, over the scandal of obsolescence-by-breakdown represented by these new appliances, hearings demanded not only by consumers but by the same folks who wanted energy efficiency for the environmental benefits as well! Just what are we saving when the appliances don't last?! Consumers or the environment either one?

We had HBO for 10yrs or so because someone forgot to switch something. That was nice. But whatever siphoning is going on here is outside my purview. Other than not using stuff in general, there's really no rhyme or reason to it. I can't even explain why or what is causing the fluctuations. Well, except for "Xmas light season" lol. Damn, that's like a 50% increase just for those lights. (apologies to DRich for posting this ;)) Be bold and risk defeat, or be cautious and encourage it. |

We all had free HBO in Calif in the late 70's and into the 80's. Just climb the poll and put in the filter and run the cable to the black market box you got for 10 bucks. It wasn't even against the law, it sure is now. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

It was always against the law, it is just that the signal is now digital and the encryption can't be beaten with cheater boxes. |

Our first cable box was around 1982. I opened the box to look inside and I did the same thing on a friend of mines. My box had an extra IC chip populated in a socket that his didn't have. His family got all of the movie channels and we did not. I pulled that IC chip out of mine and started getting all of the channels. In the wisdom of the cable company they put in a "scrambler" chip and not a "de-scrambler" chip. At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a detrrent. |

That meant you could hang a small TV in your kitchen or bathroom and just play local news or the traffic report without a set top box. If you wanted CNN or TNT or any of the national channels you needed a set top box. The FCC modified the rules so that cable companies were permitted to encrypt every single channel on their system, including local news stations and PBS. Now instead of hanging a small tv with a mail and a wire, you had to build some mechanism to handle the wires and set top box. I think small things like that turned people off to cable. |

Pacomartin Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 1068 Posts: 12569 | i have told the electric company that I wish they would move a 50 kVA pole mounted transformer off of private property and moved 100 feet to the right of way of the street where it is not surrounded by trees. I've had no luck, as they don't like to replace anything unless it fails. |

All power co's get constant requests to do this and that. They don't have the manpower so they ignore until it needs to be done. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |
