My wife just applied for a new job and has been scheduled for a second interview. The future employer asked to have access to her Facebook page which is currently set private. Is this typical today? If I was hiring I would definitely do a social media search on the candidate for publicly available information but I would have never asked permission to see private areas.

How desperate is your wife? I wouldn't want to work at that place.

My advice: Refuse. Wait for them to reject her. Go talk to a lawyer about options of suing them.

I agree
Private means private
What assurances can a employer give that any information will remain private.
I cannot forsee any employer assurance that would satisfy me
or
Just say I deleted my FB page

She is not desperate at all. There are already a lot of negatives about this job that I don't think she would accept it even if they offered her a lot more money than she makes now. I would have no issue giving access to my social media presence but her and I disagree on many things. She seems disgusted that they would even ask.

In college, I had an interview for an internship at a small tax accounting firm.

I walk in for my interview and the guy has a printout (!!) of my MySpace page (which I hadn't updated in a couple years - even by this time, MySpace was dead).

So he started asking me about my favorite movies I had listed, the funny quotes I had listed, etc. It was awkward as hell.

I didn't get the internship.

But one of my roommates who was also an accounting major got it. And it turned out to be a disaster. The guy was shady and had a bad reputation amongst the local accounting community. My roommate eventually got fired from it.

So all in all it worked out well for me.

I like her already. You should agree with your wife more.

For real. I'm pissed off just reading this.

What if a potential employer asked you:
Why do you enjoy discussions of poisons and corpses with erections? Why do you enjoy discussions about naked women sleeping on the sand being hunted down by hungry giant crabs?

No one expects to have access to your private email account, so why should they expect the option to deprivatize anything else you made private just because it can be done?

That's what I would ask, you want access to my private email as well? How about my letters in my actual mailbox.

See it from the employers side. It's so
hard to get rid of somebody now once
you hire them, you want to make sure
you know as much as possible before
you do. The place where I get gas
always has a help wanted sign in
the window. They told me the few
who apply don't have the minimum
credit score needed to be hired by
the main company. They've learned
that a low score means a high probability
you'll steal from them.

Same when you rent an apartment. Low
score equals you squatting there for 6
months rent free.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.
