He probably had sent her gifts and/or money before. She may not even exist

That's what I'm thinking. The pic of
her has photoshopped written all
over it. Women who look like that
in any country don't need to start
online relationships with foreign
men. I'm betting it's a scam.

There's a long running show on MTV about this phenomenon: "Catfish"

Quote: MTV's Catfish

about the show

From the producers of the acclaimed documentary film, "Catfish," comes a new MTV series that brings together couples who've interacted solely through their LCD screens. Over the course of months or years - these romantics have become smitten - but what will happen when they meet in real life for the first time?

In each episode, with the guidance and help of the star of the "Catfish" movie, Nev Schulman, and his filmmaking pal, Max Joseph, a hopeful romantic partner will go on an emotional journey to discover the truth about their significant other. Has that object of affection been telling the truth? Will true love truly blossom? When that fateful knock on the front door finally comes - only one thing is certain - that these incredible voyages will be filled with mystery, uncertainty, forgiveness, joy, and sometimes, even shocking revelations.

catfish [kat-fish] verb: To pretend to be someone you're not online by posting false information, such as someone else's pictures, on social media sites usually with the intention of getting someone to fall in love with you.

It's probably my fault, as most people use emoticons to clarify their emotions.

We need emojis on this forum. If we had them I would have been able to better convey that I was laughing at myself in my previous post.

Probably not even posted by a female ... just a scam to receive visa money or tear-jerker funds or something.

I'd not heard the term catfish but such ads in personals and the like has been a prison scam in the US for decades and its control in Louisiana was the reason for one prominent murder.

I know a guy that got a mail order bride
30 years ago. She's Filipino, they're
still together and have grown kids.
She is a hell on wheels nasty woman,
she'll get right up in your face over
nothing at all. Her husband is terrified
of her, but hey, that's what you get by
buying unseen product. Her problem
is she's dumb as a rock and thinks she's
correct in every situation and will fight
you to the death over it. Charming.

We had an older Chinese gentleman at the lab who wrote to three different women for about a year. He went over to China to interview them and came home with a bride. I mentioned my neighbor and the White Russian brides from Minsk.

If you want to see a lot of ads for mail order brides look in the back of high end stereo equipment magazines. I was shocked at how many there were.

I knew another guy in the 70's who
got a bride from Cambodia. He was
crafty, he never taught her English
or allowed her to learn it. He spoke
her language because he was a
teacher in Cambodia. Their kids learned
both languages but only spoke
to their mother in her native tongue.

He said this kept her home and an
obedient wife, she was never allowed
to be Westernized. She was very docile
and seemed nice enough. I haven't
seen them since the 80's.
