The older style now only produces black screens. You must enter it as a link

We were avoiding the ads when you could embed them
Think that had something to do with it?

I wasn't conscious that embedding skipped ads, but Youtube had $9 billion in revenue in 2015, compared to Netflix Revenues in 2015 of $6.78 billion. I wonder what the cost to the companies? Netflix spends a lot of money making crappy TV series and movies. I assume they must spend money on youtube, but I can't imagine it is nearly as high.
