BTW the year for free upgrades is almost up. Afterwards it will cost you to upgrade your home PCs.

Oh, I know most people will stick with Win7 til at least two years past its end of support date. But anyone suffering under the twin evils of Win8(.1) (Update) can get a much better OS for free right now.

Unless you have Start8 or some other Start menu replacement. In that case, Win10 is not that big a deal.

This is your friendly reminder that the free upgrade to Win10 expires on July 29th. If you want to upgrade on July 30th and onwards, it should cost you money. The free upgrade only applies to home systems, running Win7, Win8, Win8.1 and possibly Win10 previews (I really need to check that for my old laptop). it does not apply to volume licenses.

Thus far my only regret in upgrading my home desktop PC is that I didn't do it sooner.

Reviving a dead thread because a coworker got a notebook PC with (ugh) Windows 8 installed on it.

I assumed it was company-issued, but it wasn't. At learning that, I couldn't help to ask "WHY?!"

I think she's missed the free upgrade window to the real OS, Windows AE (I mean Windows 10). No idea what the upgrade costs. So I advised her to get Start8.

Seriously, though WHY?!!

Most of the time I run BOINC, Firefox and casual games downloaded from the web (but not web-based). The rest I'll run Office, Acrobat and some very simple image-handling software. Rarely some windows-based games on CD or DVD like The Sims.

I tried that years ago with some other flavor of Linux. I forget the name. the selling point was that it could boot from the CD. Long story short, I never figured out how to run anything with it, like a web browser (which probably wasn't even included, but who knows).

I've been running Fedora (Linux version ) for a few years. It seems to have some trouble with Flash, and Google Earth brings it down hard. I don't particularly like Windows 10, as it seems extremely bloated.

Coming soon to the Windows App Store (bet you didn't know there is one), three distributions of LINUX.

Ok. Someone explain to me WTF is going on now.

Also coming soon, so it is rumored: iTunes.
