The Passion of the Christ (POC) predictably caused a lot of controversy when it was released in 2004. Strangely it didn't do as well either with American Catholics or in Catholic countries. Many Catholics are used to artwork depicting the pain and suffering of Christ at his execution. Protestant churches have traditionally muted the graphic details, so the movie was a revelation to many fundamental Protestants and made possibly the single greatest fortune for one man from a single movie.

It is the only R rated film with a Christian theme AFAIK.

The movie did not play well with many Jewish adherents, and of course, Mel Gibson is anathema to many people since his DUI arrest and rant in 2006.

The last three years, there have been very successful Christian religious movies released. Certainly not on the scale of POC
Heaven is for Real 4/16/14
War Room TriS 8/28/15
Miracles from Heaven 3/16/16

I wonder what his budget for the sequel will be, and if he will self finance again?

I laughed at that one, the whole virgin
thing in the NT is just so silly. Obsession
with sex is not a pretty thing.
