Verizon has announced their 2G equipment will not work at the end of 2019, but AT&T is shutting down their 2G network in a few weeks by the end of 2016.

Verizon Prepaid just terminated all their plans for less than unlimited minutes. Bottom line plan is now $30 a month for unlimited talk and text on "basic phones" (smart phones are now excluded). Verizon Postpaid cheapest plan is now $55 for taxes and fees.

Is anyone here affected by the AT&T 2G shutdown?

A little.

We got enough advance notice, and bought 3G flip phones and other dumb phones ($10 to $30 each) and can continue with our prepaid plans.

Since we don't use all of the prepaid minutes, it ends up costing us about $9 a month per line.

My father has a grandfathered $5 a month plan on Verizon Prepaid It only gives you 20 minutes but it accumulates non used minutes (which he has over 800). If they eliminate basic phones entirely the minimum plan right now is $45 for a smart phone. Similarly my mother will go up from $15 to $45.

If they are permitted to continue with their old plans with new phones that would be a simple one time expense. But I don't think Verizon is going to do that.

Right now it looks like Sprint and T-mobile will support 2G for the indefinite future.
