Frankly, I would have hoped the new piece would reflect the casino aspect of the town. Perhaps a slot machine. After all, there IS a Monopoly themed machine....

Or just eliminate "Free Parking"

The hat is a formal top hat. That indicates wealth.

Good point about the top hat, and a slot machine also would have been sweet!

This isn't specific to Las Vegas..
Are you aware that the streets are based upon Atlantic City?

Doh, I was, but only vaguely, as the board I use is related to London :)

The popular version of Monopoly in Mexico is called "Turista." It's pretty much the same game, except you ahve countries instead of streets, Mexico instead of Go, The North Pole instead of Jail, Airlines instead of trains, etc. For game peices, usually identical airplanes of different colors are used.

Since Monopoly uses streets, why not simply use identical cars of different colors? or even different cars of different colors?

Odd, but one of my older sets had a canon. I'd vote for that, but in absentia, the battleship.

I think around 1970 they voted off the cannon. My old set had one too. I think a lot of people weren't sure what it was supposed to be.

Well, on the subject of "not sure what it is," I'd say the thimble is living on borrowed time.

My mother would always pick the thimble. To me is the most boring piece on the board. When I was a kid and we played she was into sewing and actually used thimbles, so that is probably why she liked it.

If the game didn't have such a long history, and the tokens regarded with such affection, I doubt that any manufacturer would go through the expense of such elaborate game pieces.

Previous tokens retired in the 1950s (replaced by the dog, man on horseback, and wheelbarrow):
Lantern, Rocking horse, and Purse

The "man on horseback" was also subsequently retired.

The "cannon" was actually a Howitzer.
