I think that you use the word "inscrutable" without malice, but you should realize it can be very offensive. The "Yellow Peril villains" was a creation of the British in the 19th century trade wars with China, and carried over to the Chinese immigration to California. These villains were untrustworthy, scheming Chessmasters who used their lack of emotion to disguise their motives.

Certain words have become so associated with stereotypes, that it is better to simply retire them rather than argue that they are not inherently belittling.

In a similar manner, words like Oriental and Eskimo are also not inherently negative, but they are considered antiquated at best. An effort should be made to call people by a word that they use to describe themselves.
