Andy Kaufman as "Latka Gravas" also took a minor character from the same show and turned it into a "career".

Actually, the character was more or less developed before Taxi aired. Andy Kaufman showed him off on SNL three years earlier.

Andy Kaufman lived less than one year after Taxi ended.

A tougher question would have been to name the TV series of all of TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Characters of All Time (May 4–10, 2002 issue of the magazine)
1 Louie De Palma
2 Ed Norton
3 Lucy Ricardo
4 Arthur 'Fonzie' Fonzarelli
5 Archie Bunker
6 Spock
7 Lt. Columbo
8 Emma Peel
9 Barney Fife
10 George Costanza
11 J.R. Ewing
12 Oscar Madison Tie at #12
13 Felix Unger Tie at #12
14 Ralph Kramden
15 Homer Simpson
16 Lilly Harper
17 Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko
18 Alex P. Keaton
19 Lt. Theo Kojak
20 Maxwell Smart
21 Eddie Haskell
22 Mary Richards
23 Maynard G. Krebs
24 Sgt. Andy Sipowicz
25 Paladin
26 Jim Rockford
27 Roseanne Conner
28 Steve Urkel
29 Edina Monsoon
30 Ted Baxter
31 Frank Pembleton
32 Dr. Niles Crane
33 Reverend Jim Ignatowski
34 Diane Chambers
35 Mork
36 Cosmo Kramer
37 Fred G. Sanford
38 Hawk
39 Jane Hathaway
40 Arthur

44 Adam
45 David Addison Jr.
46 Jane Tennison
47 Xena
48 Douglas Wambaugh
49 Miles Drentell
50 Elliot Carlin
51 Buddy Sorrell

My guess is that nearly everyone could get half of these right, but nobody could get them all. At least one character is from a British show widely aired in the USA.

Maynard G Krebs makes it, but not Gilligan.
I can understand sort of Mary Ann or Ginger not being on the list.
But not ELVIRA or Ellie May

I know some are from "Hill Street Blues" and ER/St. Elsewhere hospital drama's, but I didn't watch much of those shows.

I got 37 I'm pretty sure about. "#16 was the first one I drew a blank on.

Where's Thomas Magnum, Steve McGarrett, and KITT?

My favorite bit was when Jim had to take the driver's license exam:

That was good. In Spanish you conjugate verbs differently between making a command or not, which would have avoided the confusion in that scene.

Also, Fonzie would not have even made my top 50 list. He started out fine but the show became unrealistic when he would snap his fingers and five girls would start hanging all over him. I recall another scene where he hit the wall in a jail and the bars sprung open. Ridiculous. I think the show originally tried to have a Diner (movie) feel to it but it went way off those tracks quickly. In fact, it had at least two actors from that movie.

I admit I liked Happy Days as a kid and will take on anyone in Happy Days trivia, but I wouldn't be able to take anything after the first season today.

I really started watching US sitcoms in 1986-7 or so. Anything prior to that is pretty much terra incognita, with a few exceptions due to reruns (MASH and Three's Company in particular). Overall sitcoms don't translate well when dubbed, and don't get much of an audience, with a few exceptions like Hogan's Heroes or Gilligan's island.

One thing the Wizard might appreciate, though. There was an ep of Three's Company involving Felipe's sister who doesn't speak English. In the dubbed version, they had her come from England (yeah right) and unable to speak Spanish. It was worth watching the horrid dubbing just for the irony ;)

I read a book translated from English to Spanish where a kid bought something online and couldn't get it to work because the instructions were in Spanish. In the translated version, the instructions were in German.

I read another book translated from English to Spanish where there was a running story line throughout the book that was a play on words in the National Anthem. The translator evidently got so frustrated that he/she footnoted how the joke just didn't come through in Spanish and tried to explain why it was funny in English. I've never seen a translated book do that before.

That was an excellent try. Although if you thought harder you should have come up with #39 and #51 as they are from classic sitcoms from the 1960's.

In movies like "Kindergarten Cop" a lot of the humor comes from Arnold ordering the six year old children around in his German accented English. I know that when his movies are dubbed he is given flawless German accent.

You'll Never Get Rich....(digging a ditch)

Note: Jane Tennyson was character based on an actual person but in reality the actual woman was much more tough, combative and crude. I often wonder why this change was made.

I loved Hogan's Heroes and don't know anyone else who will admit that. I remember as a kid watching it the same night as MASH, I don't recall which was on first but one followed the other.

Edit: I must be mis-remembering because I just Googled them and MASH didn't start until 1972 and Hogan's Heroes ended in 1971.
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a detrrent.
