Box Office Mojo lists the following as the most profitable "Christian" films
$370.8 The Passion of the Christ 25. Feb. 2004
$291.7 The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe 9. Dec. 2005
$141.6 The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian 16. May. 2008
$104.4 The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader 10. Dec. 2010
$91.4 Heaven is for Real 16. Apr. 2014
$67.8 War Room 28. Aug. 2015
$61.7 Miracles from Heaven 16. Mar. 2016
$60.8 God's Not Dead 21. Mar. 2014
$59.7 Son of God 28. Feb. 2014
$43.9 Soul Surfer 8. Apr. 2011
$37.6 The Nativity Story 1. Dec. 2006
$36.9 Risen 19. Feb. 2016
$34.5 Courageous 30. Sep. 2011
$33.5 Fireproof 26. Sep. 2008

Last years "Miracles from Heaven" and "Risen" certainly upped interest in the genre.

Of course in the 1950's historical dramas like Ben Hur and "The Robe" were very popular.

The amount of advertising spent on The Resurrection of Gavin Stone must be a new record.

I can't imagine who would pay to see such films. Go to some medical clinics and they play in the waiting room, go to a youth church group and such films might be shown. I guess its a safe film for taking the brats to see. Maybe its a town with only one movie theater? I don't know.

Ofcourse since they don't cost much to make, I guess its all profit. They probably don't even have to pay 'location fees' as hospitals, churches, volunteer fire departments all donate equipment and filming sites. Scripts? I think there are three scripts... the names and locations keep changing though. A wife is tempted to stray..but soon returns to sanity and the sanctity of her marriage vows. A man is tempted to stray but his pastor gets him to drop the pills and ask for his wife's forgiveness. A girl makes a mistake but the young man's pastor persuades him to "do the right thing" and marry her and they live happily ever after in a world free from alcohol and drugs and sinful music.

Faith based, but not a "Christian" film.

But what about Jimmy Stewart's "It's A Wonderful Life", Warren Beatty's "Heaven Can Wait", Robert De Niro's "The Mission", and George Burn's "Oh, God" trilogy? Okay, maybe not George Burns...

Also, Jim Carrey's "Bruce Almighty" with an $81M budget grossed $243M (the sequel, "Evan Almighty" lost money).

"The Passion of the Christ" was actually a pretty amazing movie, no matter what you think of Mel Gibson.

Why?

It's a story of Russian Jews at the turn of the century, but it's not particularly religious in theme.

Would a story of, say, Italians in the 10th century be a Christian story because the characters are Christian? Are movies like Gladiator or Cleopatra Pagan films?

Some recent "faith based" films are disturbing and challenging.

I think it is a given how this film will end. The trailer pretty much gives away the plot.
