Trump could still get Mexico to pay for it. He has to corner the market on Trump piñatas. I'm sure lots of people down there want to hit his likeness with a bat.

If he sold Trump Piñatas, then the proper and respectful thing to do would be to pee on them, not hit them with a stick.

Considering how much wealthier and powerful the U.S. government is relative to the Mexican government, don't you think the U.S. would win virtually any dispute with Mexico?

Not when both play by the rules.

The above statement will fuel paranoid fantasies that the rules are rigged against the US.

In other words, Mexico needs the U.S. more than the U.S. needs Mexico. (I'm open to the possibility that I'm completely wrong on this.)

It seems like China has far more leverage over the U.S. than little ol' Mexico.

Yes on both. But a border is a big advantage. I've often thought it far from the worst idea in the world for Mexico to lease stretches of border to wealthy European and Asian countries to let them establish sovereign enclaves there. Rent would be a percentage of the gross export income generated by the enclave.
