I hear that the half Ironman will no longer be offered for the 9/29 Triathlon.

So, I'm thinking of another one to do. The one my boot camp friend wants to do is on Oct 22 in Tempe AZ.

Another is May 6 in St. George, UT. Although I really like Saint George, I'm worried that three months won't be enough time to prepare. The biking course is also quite hilly, with 3,536 feet of elevation gain. By comparison, the 100-mile century I did last year had 1,300 meters, which works out to 4,265 feet. What made it hard was that all the elevation gain was in about 1/3 of the course. I know the Saint George area quite well and nothing is really steep, like the Turtle Rock part of Irvine. The running portion of this triathlon has 1,267 feet of elevation gain. A reason to strive for St. George is Vegas is simply brutally hot in the summer and it will be torture to prepare in that heat. I'll have to wake up at 4 AM to beat the heat, as I did when I was training for the marathon.

Bummer about the Lake Mead event. What happened?

The bike portion of the St. George event looks brutal. The altitude (3,000 ft.+) is pretty extreme to start with, then you only go up. At least the last 7 miles look like they are all downhill. It would be a challenge.

Can't you sign up for the full Iron Man and quit halfway through? ;)

I don't know. I checked the web site and it still indicates the Half Ironman is an option. I'll see if I can find out what is going on.

EvenBob asked me if I had ever been to Lake Mead. Just a coincidence, I am sure.

The elevation profiles are indicated on the website for the Half Ironman.
