(I will stop saying this in every post after next Sunday; it wouldn't be funny afterwards.)

Rome fact of the day: it's popular to think of the Roman Emperors as holding the title "Caesar." The terms "Kaiser," and "Tzar" even derive from "Caesar." But in actual fact the title of the Roman Emperors is "Augustus."

So what does the title "Caesar" indicate? That will be on the next tidbit.

Furthermore, in my opinion (the) Baltimore (Ravens) must be destroyed.

So, the title "Caesar" was given by the sitting emperor to his designated successor. Late in the Principate period and early in the Dominate period, the title was also conferred on the Emperor's co-ruler, when such was the arrangement. The tradition was started when Gaius Octavius assumed the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, upon being posthumously adopted by Gaius Julius Caesar.

Rome fact of the day: Rome began as just another city-state in the Italian peninsula. Like other such cities, it warred with its neighbors often, sometimes taking some over. At the time of Rome's infancy, so to speak, central Italy was an Etruscan and Latin region, while southern Italy was largely populated by Greek colonists. The south in fact was known as Magna Graecia. To the north, around the Alps, lived the "barbarian" Gauls.

Rome fact of the day: The Greeks, be it in Macedonia, Magna Graecia, Sicily and Greece propper, were well aware of Rome. But most of them considered them little more than agressive barbarians without much in the way of culture or civilization. When King Pyrrhus of Eprius, a Greek Kingdom in what is now the Balkans (if memory serves) came in aid of Greek cities in Italy, and to carve out an empire for himself, he figured he'd win every encounter with the Roman Legions.

He sort of did. But every battle he won cost him dearly in terms of men and materiel. In the end he withdrew back home, having gained nothing. He's attributed to have said "One more such victory and I'll be utterly ruined" after winning a battle against the Romans. This is the origin of the term Pyrrhic Victory. That is, a victory which costs more to obtain than what is gained by it.

Sometime later, Rome would conquer all of Greece.

Rome fact of the day: Roman politics in many ways were very similar to our own. But there were a few big differences which, frankly, amke Rome seem not just strange, but downright bizarre. The most notable is how frequent politicians resorted to assasination, either by themselves or through agents. This took off in the last century of the Republic, when the rule of law became ever more a joke. It hit its peak in the 3rd Century AD, when even the men in charge of protecting the emperor, the Praetorian Guard, murdered an emperor and put the throne up for auction.

Think about that when you mull things such as attack ads or the lack of civility in modern politics.

Rome fact of the day: In Republican times, Law and custom allowed for the appointment of a Dictator in times of emergency. The Dictator had absolute powers and his orders were nto to be questioned. But he served for only six months in such a capacity. After the emergency was dealt with, or the time was up, he was expected to step down. Amazingly most of them did. Not amazingly, it would trouble both the citizens and the Senate when a man would claim a Dictatorship for life.

The most famous Roman Dictator, at least in the US, is Cincinnatus. He's sometiems referred to as "Rome's George Washington." And of course there's a big city named in his honor.

I can't think of anything interesting and quick about Rome, so here's a quick Roman joke:

"In the year of Julius and Caesar."

No, it's not very funny.
