50 pound notes are for on-track bookmakers and cash-in-hand builders/plumbers/electricians.

It is natural human tendency to use the largest denomination banknote for large cash purchases, if they are legal or illegal. Forcing people to use smaller denominations may only be an inconvenience.

The 50 pound note has jumped in circulation by over 100 million from the 2nd to the 3rd series.

28 Feb 2011: 199 million of second series of 50 pound banknote
2 Nov 2011 Third series issued
28 Feb 2012: 198 million of both series
30 Apr 2014: Second series declared invalid
28 Feb 2017: 312 million

SERIES
1st £50 Sir Christopher Wren 20 March 1981 20 September 1996
2nd £50 Sir John Houblon 20 April 1994 30 April 2014
3rd £50 Matthew Boulton & James Watt 2 November 2011 in use
