The Manhattan project had three partners.

Well, don't forget it was mostly the work of several immigrants: Szilard, Wigner, Fermi, Teller, Einstein, and others.

It was a boondoggle that bled funds from the efforts in fighting the real war and exposed the US to great risk when Russia was given the secrets for free.

Perhaps this is a very good parallel for the nuclear weapons in North Korea. Potent weapons in the hands of madmen. More costly economically than as a weapon.

Unfortunately I buy the theory that if you let your neighbors develop something like that first you're potentially in trouble, peace or war.

So even in peacetime, rapid development was a good idea. And unavoidable.

I mean, it's more than a faster flying jet, or some other improvement.

The primary motivation for the Manhattan Project was the fear that Germany might get it first despite having killed or exiled so many Jewish scientists. A slowr paced, less well funded project would have allowed for fighting the real war. Israel is believed to have dozens if not hundreds of warheads and one submarine that never enters the Mediterranean and is targeted for the USA and the UK. They funded their atomic program privately with nothing in their budget about it at all but it was probably a mistake to allow them to do it much less cooperate with them.

I read that 2.7 million Koreans, 800K Chinese, and 33 K Americans died in the Korean war.

Wikipedia has slightly lower numbers.
South Korea: 373,599 killed
387,744 abducted/missing
North Korea: 1,550,000 killed and wounded

China and N Korea are at best estimates. Nobody probably really knows.

Another Dem war, like WWII and Viet Nam.
Eisenhower ran on getting us out of Korea
in 1953, the war Truman got us into. Did
somebody mention that already? Of course
Kennedy was behind Viet Nam, and Johnson
made the war industrial complex rich.

Woodrow Wilson was also Democrat, so WWI counts as well.

In 1898 the United States Navy battleship Maine was mysteriously sunk in Havana harbor; political pressures from the Democratic Party pushed the administration of Republican President William McKinley into a war that he had wished to avoid.

Now Russia is warning N Korea, as well
as China. What is Kim's end game, he's
a pipsqueak in a game of giants. He'll
get it from all sides. China, Russia and
the US are all too deeply enmeshed
economically to ever let N Korea mess
it up.
