I think even the church leaders would quietly admit that much of it was just emotional. The branch of the church in Toronto was one of our most famous: Toronto Blessing.

I don't see how you can separate the emotional aspect of religious ecstasy through the centuries.

The first great awakening happened when the population of Colonial America was still less than one million

The second great awakening followed in the 19th century

Neither do I. One of the guys I shared a house with in college was an understudy to the pastor. He said privately that they told him that 90% of the "signs of the spirit" were just people being caught up in the experience by their own emotions and not from god.

p.s. Alison Krauss is one of my favorites. I love her version of that song.

Yeah, this all sounds strange to Catholic ears. I did have a couple of experiences with what we call the Charismatic Movement and they were always interesting and strange experiences.

The god religions, Xtionity, Islam,
Mormonism, are all about emotion.
It's why the Catholic's have Jesus
still nailed to the cross when you
enter their church. They want a
gut wrenching emotion out of
the congregation.

It's why members give their testimonies.
How horrid and wretched their lives
were before they saw the light of
Jay-Sus.. The god religions pander
to the base emotions people have, it's
their bread and butter.

Buddhism and Hinduism are much more
intellectual. They're in it for the long haul,
for your reincarnated soul over the eons.
The god people are always having a fire
sale, better act now, it's almost too late,
hurry hurry hurry..

Yawn..

What goes on in the charismatic churches would look quite strange to members of the traditional Protestant denominations too.

Remember it is you guys who are presenting emotional arguments with little basis in reality, not me.

Such a general statement you have to know is wrong even as you are writing it.

I do love it so much when you tell me what and why Catholics believe or do what we do. It is so cute.

This is something that no one has ever said ever, except of course Evenbob.

LOLOLOL! Yeah, right, I'm overcome
with emotion that there is no god.

Seriouly, you do this all the time. State
things as facts that are categorically
not true. Does that really work, don't
people see right thru your charade?

Have you ever attended a Xtion
worship service? The congregation
often sways back and forth with the
music, clapping their hands and
raising their arms over their heads.
Some have their eyes closed and
are almost swooning with emotion.
They cry out 'thank you Jesus, thank
you lord' and and are quite caught
up in the moment.

Ever see an exorcism? It's an emotional
roller coaster, what a performance. And
that huge image of Jesus that's bloody
and still hanging on the cross as you
enter a Catholic church, it's there to grab
at your heart strings, to make you feel
emotionally wretched. All the god religions
are like this, with raw emotion you have
nothing.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.
