That's from the Hebrew Bible of the Jews, it has nothing to do with the Catholic religion. As FrG has pointed out many times, the NT makes the OT obsolete. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

I'm quite sure Catholics respect the Old Testament, although they may have a different term for it. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

Sure they respect it, but they don't seem to use it much. Every time we quote from it here to make a point, FrG says the NT outranks everything in the OT. The 'new' came to throw out the 'old'. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Spikenard, you can still get it. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

This is a huge topic. Protestants also have a difficult time putting into words the place of the Old Testament and will disagree among each other about it. The conservatives tend to like it more than the liberals, especially the parts like calling for the death penalty for homosexuality. Almost all will agree that the New "outranks" the Old. Still, every bible I've ever seen has both. I've yet to meet anybody who would say you could just rip out the Old Testament pages from a bible because they aren't pertinent any longer. That is not only heresy but renders the New Testament unknowable. The New Testament fulfills the Old Testament prophecies and Evenbob has somehow distorted that to mean the New makes the Old worthless. Every single Mass and every single prayer I say has passages from the Old Testament. It is beyond essential. I hear the PG-13 Song of Songs all the time at weddings and in my prayers. Bob, I am having such a difficult time dealing with you lately. I don't think I've ever seen you this bad. Twisting things and putting words in my mouth. Avoiding comments and questions and being so mean. If you don't want to be friendly in our discourse or if you continue to be dishonest I would ask you very politely to stop posting in these threads. I am sure there are many topics we can debate, and dare I say some we might agree on, on this forum. However, you are proving yourself to be just an antogonist here. Can I point out that you ignored my comments about recognizing the weight of following the Gospel and jumped on a phrase "get your mind out of the gutter" that you took out of context. I was not referring to sex, which I also have said to you many times is a wonderful blessing and a holy and beautiful thing! I was referring to you thinking the essence of a gay man's life (or anyone's life really) and relationship is only about genital activity. I'm sorry that preoccupied you into your 40s but I think now you realize that it is not the most important part of any of your relationships. “It is with the smallest brushes that the artist paints the most exquisitely beautiful pictures.” ( |

And I always have a difficult time dealing with you, so what. Is that how you live, you only deal with people who don't challenge you and think exactly as you do? I'm sorry if I don't structure my posts to the exact way you think they should be structured, but that's just how discussions go. You have to tolerate the idiosyncracies of others. I thought you always said the OT was then, and the NT came to overrule the authority of the old. I stand corrected, the OT has just as much authority and importance as the NT. All the laws in the Torah are as applicable today as they were in Jesus time. Shall we go over them one by one? If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Thank you for understanding and your quasi apology is accepted.
First of all I think there are around 632 of them. Let's just focus on the 10 commandments that would be easier. For the record I love it when people challenge each other about their beliefs and way of thinking. What I have a problem with is when people aren't fair in representing the other's position and distort it. It makes me think you aren't listening and don't care about what I am saying. “It is with the smallest brushes that the artist paints the most exquisitely beautiful pictures.” ( |

You mean like how you're always saying how glad you are that I'm 'coming around' to whatever position you're pushing, when you know dang well that's as far from the truth as you can get? Quit treating me like I'm new here, we've been talking about this stuff since 2011, and almost daily since 2014. I can categorically say I've never spoken this much to another person in my life. Thousands of posts, and at least a thousand PM's. You should be greatly complimented, or greatly dismayed. Take your pick. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |
