Lots of reason for it to remain regional. Remember, most people just have a choice of 2-3 providers. It is like asking how many car dealers do we need? Even if there are 10,000 in the nation I still have 1-2 local for each brand.

Since most of those are regional, there is room for more, and room for them to expand in to other territories to increase competition.

There is still very little choice for high speed (25MBps+) internet access, though. Roughly 78% of Americans either have no high speed access or just one provider.

For a lot of people, the choices aren't cost competitive (wireless or satellite vs cable and fibre) or performance competitive - high latency, low data caps, that sort of thing.

When I walk my town or visit small towns around here I wonder about if one can make some money being an ISP. I think you would need 2,000+ customers to make it work.
