Way back when the WWW was still new, there was a website where some young woman was supposedly dying of cancer.

Stupid and fake.
You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really?

First, glad to hear you survived the earthquake. I've been out of town but heard about it.

Thanks.

But shouldn't you, of all people, apply basic probability theory? Out of a population of millions, what are the odds any people you know are among the 200-300 dead?

I'll grant you the odds are higher of them being among those affected materially.

Not the slightest idea. My plates are State of Mexico.

But you also live at an elevation that is more than 300 meters above the ancient lakebed. So the ground is a lot more stable.

Now people get angry at me because I don't panic each time they think there's an earthquake.

As far as I know, neither Guadalajara nor Monterrey are affected by earthquakes.

Guadalajara gets some shocks from earthquakes in Michoacan. Monterrey is not affected.

I was curious if any major building in Mexico city was affected. We only get stories of 4 and 5 story buildings like the school.

Actually the disaster in Puerto Rico tends to dominate the news in the East Coast. As Puerto Ricans are obviously citizens, and the power grid won't be back on for months, there may be a lot of citizens that stay on the mainland until things get better (if ever).

Part of the consequences from the 85 quake were studies showing a natural resonance frequency for buildings of a certain height. I don't know the details.

There are newer rather tall buildings, like the Torre Mayor, in the most affected areas, but none fell or suffered any structural damage. The Torre Latinoamericana in the middle of downtown is much older and has been subjected to many quakes. It seems as good as new.

Over 60 years old.

I guess there was no problem with the four newest buildings.

Not as far as I know.

From back in 85, the Hotel Regis collapsed, as did the Benito Juarez national medical center.

I didn't know the latter, though I've visited its successor, built on the same site, several times over the past 12 years on business. It's a two-block wide complex of hospitals and clinics, with only one tall building of about 10 stories. As far as I know, nothing happened there this time.
