However the purpose of the second amendment was to assure that the general population was armed on par with the army. The founding fathers were wary of the potential threat to liberty of a national standing army. Here is Hamilton on the right to bear arms in Federalist Paper #29

Of course in order to establish that balance now, the citizens would need a few RPGs at the very least to defend against tanks and helicopters.

We now have a strong standing military, which as you pointed out is something that the founding fathers did not want.

For that reason, the need to call for a militia to protect against invasion, insurrection, and rebellion is obsolete.

With the existing arms controls that are in place, the idea that the us citizens could rise up against a military coup or against the government vs the people is laughable.

See what a deterrent it is? ;.)

What's the first thing Hitler did when
he was elected. He had soldiers knock
on every door in Germany and forcibly
remove every firearm. Pistols and
long guns. When the population was
disarmed, hauling people off to
concentration camps came next. That's
always the point of taking the guns
away.

When should we expect to see concentration camps in places such as Great Britain and Canada?

They have long guns in both those
places, lots of them. UK law says:

"Single-shot, bolt-action, Martini-action, lever-action (also called under-lever action) and revolver rifles and carbines are permitted, with certificate, in any calibre. Self-loading (also known as semi-automatic) or pump-action rifles are only permitted in .22 rimfire calibre."
"There is no limit on the number of guns or amount of ammunition that a SGC (shotgun certificate) holder can acquire or possess at one time." And that's England, Scotland and Ireland.

Canada is much the same. Plenty of guns
for self defense.

Eventually a majority of Americans will get tired of hearing after each mass killing:

Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die"

No one has yet set out to murder anyone with a cigarette, let alone 59 at a time.

No one has ever set out to, but they do anyway via second-hand smoke.

Why didn't anyone vote for focusing on the front site?

According to the New York Times article somebody quoted, there were 8,124 deaths by guns in the US in 2016. Compare that to the 480,000 deaths caused by tobacco (source). That is 59 times as many.

There are almost 2.7 million deaths per year in the USA. Lifestyle deaths are always going to greatly outnumber violent or accidental deaths.

We have had them in the USA. I have gambled on them. Also how many Japanese were forcibly relocated in WWII? Both groups were mostly disarmed. Note though that the previously armed Indians held out for many years.

It is rumored Mexico turned down the offer of Germany in WWI to start a second War of Mexican Aggression because they knew how many armed citizens there were here, able to pick off any occupation force.

The Japanese Americans chose not to rise in insurrection, and if the armed native Americans could hold off the government outclassed by weapons as they were for so long people should be satisfied with owning the sorts of guns you can get in Canada and GB.
