There is a concept called "borderlands" to explain areas like this. Usually, they sit between fairly evenly matched rivals. Think Alsace and Lorraine. They often never really develop one demographic, nationalistic population, instead they have features of both. On a sall scale, this can be seen with the Canadian influence on Buffalo, NY. That is very small scale. Thing is, in most places, the borders changed every generation or two. The American Southwest went to the USA after the Mexican War and stayed that way. Americans moved there, but most was sparsely populated until the 1960s, even the 1980s. That is the same period Mexicans started to pour in. We may be seeing natural flow that the USA is not exempt from. The President is a fink. |

Aren't they all? The mind hungers for that on which it feeds. |

Well, yes, but I meant conquered by the USA, not conquered by Europeans. While the USA has "borderlands", it was also 12.7% slaves and 1.5% free black in 1860. Today, the population is 13.3% African America and 2.1% "two or more races", but the location has shifted around the country. 2016 AA - State - Percent Slaves in 1860 38% Mississippi 55% 33% Louisiana 47% 32% Georgia 44% 31% Maryland 13% gone up since 1860: relatively large population of free black, which made it a magnet after civil war 27% South Carolina 57% 27% Alabama 45% 22% North Carolina 33% 20% Virginia 31% 17% Tennessee 25% 17% Florida 44% 16% Arkansas 26% 13% Texas 30% 12% Missouri 10% gone up since 1860: 8% Kentucky 20% I don't know which state will be #6 for minority majority. Maryland is only 1.5% away, but it might be Florida whose population changes more dramatically.
