I don't think that's the kind of nuclear
reaction we're talking about.

Right--no mushroom cloud.

Also, regarding the movie, to start the nuclear chain reaction, the plutonium cores would have to moved close to each other. If one of the cores was taken out of its case and put in next to another core, a deadly chain reaction would start.

I think a state sponsored nuclear terrorist attack is the only real possibility if any. I could be underestimating terrorists, but many of them have problems with regular explosives. And the level of such an attack would likely be on the scale of a seal operation. Sending some loose screws off with a nuclear device and hoping it works out would be beyond crazy.

For similar reasons, there is no need to worry about a "dirty bomb." If the materials to be used are that dirty, they would kill the bomb maker long before they got to use it.

Bombs and explosives are not as easy as they make out on TV. 1993 WTC and McVeigh are really two of the only ones to really get it right domestically. And that WTC was a bunch of goofs who thought one tower would tip over and knock the second one down, showing complete ignorance of structural engineering and design. McVeigh did figure out things but good. I don't know his bio, but he had to have had some kind of training there, or knew someone who did.

The bigger thing is "bomb" vs. "weapon." A bomb is easier to make. A weapon must be made smaller and it really has to have a good and small detonator. If you figure all of this out, the FBI will learn your signature MO. Then each successive one becomes harder and harder to get parts for without blowing your cover.

Shows you what I know. Did not know you knew so much about nuclear science. I am going by something I read at the Nuclear Museum in ABQ that in the Manhattan Project they deliberately kept pieces of uranium on separate desks, as they thought that even being a few feet apart might trigger a reaction. Perhaps they were erring too much on the side of safety.

I don't think I know a ton, just try to be generally informed. Usually being informed makes enemies of people at the office. I highly doubt they just left the pellets on the desks.

This is getting way out of my area, but I had the impression that in the Uranium bomb they dropped on Japan they simply shot too Uranium pellets at each other. They had to time it just right, so it exploded at a certain altitude, which seemed like the tricky part. Again, this is out of my area and I'm going off what I took from a documentary on the bombing.

IIRC it was a "gun" type. I am fairly sure that the fissile material was about the size of a US Nickel, or at least that is all that got used in the reaction, the rest I assume vaporized.

Little Boy had 4 triggers from what I heard:

1. Timer
2. Impact
3. Altitude
4. I forget the 4th, thinking barometer but that would be there for altitude.

The trigger was the hard part, and some poor SOB had to install it IN FLIGHT lest Enola Gay crash on takeoff.

Dennis Hof RIP

Oof. This is the first I've heard. When I drove to and from Burning Man I saw his billboards, he was running for the Nevada Assembly, I think. I think it's safe to say his is the biggest name in rural Nevada. I think his campaign slogan was "whiskey, girls, and guns." I think he should have included marijuana in that, but might have put off the many Mormons in the state.

He seemed like a decent fellow, living every man's fantasy, based on his reality show. I very much identify with his libertarian philosophy. However, he looked like he never got much exercise outside of the bedroom, which probably explains why he died at 72. RIP Dennis. Wish I could have met you before you left us.

Hof also amassed a fantastic high-end watch collection, featured in Watchtime magazine some 15 years ago. The next month, many readers wrote letters to the editor complaining about the focus on such an unsavory rascal in a fine periodical like Watchtime.

I'm sure that collection grew since then.

After a week end of party's celebrating his 72nd birthday his body was found at his Love brothel. Guests included porn actor Ron Jeremy, Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss and former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, along with a local mix of politicians.

He will be sorely missed. I hope his business had a continuity plan.
